Tampa Bay Downs late pick five play for Feb. 10, 2024

RACE 7: DREAM CONCERT is turning back to a distance over which she’s 3 for 4 off a close second in a stakes and should be prominent in the third start of her form cycle. BAZINGA C was fourth among four next-out winners the last time she saw action in the fall at Parx Racing and has since changed trainers to Saffie Joseph Jr., who excels with new acquisitions. DREAMING OF SNOW found a one-turn mile in a Gulfstream stakes too far last out and has been working fast at Tampa for the cutback to a more suitable distance.

Coast to Coast Pick 5 play for Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024

Coppola should be part of the pace in Saturday's Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint, the fist leg of the Coast to Coast Pick 5.

GP RACE 9: Spreading out in this competitive turf dash in which COPPOLA could be the dominant front-runner. He had a wide trip after an uncharacteristically slow beginning in his only dull recent performance in a Grade 2 stakes at Keeneland. CAROTARI was a chalky second in his comeback, and the 10-time winner is looking to end a drought with Irad Ortiz Jr. back aboard. PANTHER ISLAND has won two in a row, including a stakes, and is versatile in terms of running style. HEAVEN STREET is back on his preferred surface.

Weekend GamePlan: Picks for Sam F. Davis, San Marcos, Heavenly Prize

Patriot Spirit had blinkers removed for this victory in the Inaugural Stakes.

In coast-to-coast stakes handicapping Saturday, one finds oneself bouncing between the sparse and the inscrutable. If fields aren’t short, they’re riddled with difficult questions. Maybe we have some answers.

Breakout Beyers: Tuscan Gold shows scope to go distance in maiden win

Benoit Photo
Ultimate Authority (outside) and second finisher Where’s My Ring both showed ability in this Feb. 2 maiden race at Santa Anita, finishing well clear of the third-place horse.

Each week in this space, the top Beyer performances by maiden winners will be featured and analyzed. Click here for a complete archive.

Brad Free's Santa Anita horses to watch from week of Feb. 2-3, 2024

NAUVOO
Trainer: Kristin Mulhall
Last race: Feb. 2, 2nd
Finish: 1st by 11 1/2
Beyer: 94
Claiming front-runner looks like a timely $12,500 claim by Mulhall from Librado Baricio. Sped to lead in mile race, extended margin, and crushed. Can handle class hike, prefers dirt route.

Sunday TimeformUS Highlight Horse: Writer’s Regret gets logical class relief

Aqueduct | Race 6 | Post Time 2:51 p.m. (ET)

This $25k claimer for New York-breds is pretty wide open, and it’s not made any easier by the presence of two coupled entries. One half of the Mark Hennig pair will have to scratch, since Dylan Davis is named on both. Between the two, I would prefer Warriors Revenge (#2), though he obviously has questions to answer after failing to show up with any kind of effort off the layoff last time.

Santa Anita late pick five play for Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024

Benoit Photo
Kirstenbosch has been working fast for her return in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes.

RACE 6: After romping in her debut on the dirt, VENGANZA went to the sidelines following a troubled fifth in last year’s Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks. The daughter of 12 percent turf sire Curlin is out of a Grade 1-winning grass expert and is sent out by hot trainer Richard Mandella, who has solid numbers with long-term comebackers. RUGELACH won three of her last four, prevailing most recently when turning back from a mile to six furlongs. She should be the dominant speed.

Gulfstream Park late pick five play for Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024

Debra A. Roma
Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes favorite Fierceness is a single on Ron Gierkink's late pick five ticket.

RACE 8: MILLIAT just missed to future Ginger Brew Stakes winner Ozara in her debut on this side of the pond when making just her second career start in the Wait a While Stakes. The Irish-bred has worked four times since then, and accomplished European rider Oisin Murphy takes over. LIFE’S AN AUDIBLE was a wide second in the Ginger Brew in her first start since a five-length loss in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
