Blame stretches legs in Churchill work

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Blame, among the favorites for the Classic, topped a group of four Breeder's Cup starters to work before the renovation break at a chilly Churchill Downs on Monday.

Blame, with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard, went an easy half mile in 49.72 seconds before galloping out five-eighths in 1:03.56. He was followed, in order, by Thiskyhasnolimit (Dirt Mile), a half in 48.66; Warrior's Reward (Sprint), four furlongs in 49.02; and Riley Tucker (Sprint), four furlongs in 49.51.

Temple City will skip Breeders’ Cup Marathon

Temple City, winner of the Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar, will skip the Breeders' Cup Marathon in favor of a start in the Hollywood Turf Cup on Nov. 13.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Temple City, winner of the Grade 3 Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar in July, will not start in Friday’s $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs, trainer Carla Gaines said Sunday.

Instead, owner B. Wayne Hughes and Gaines have opted to leave Temple City at Hollywood Park for the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup over 1 1/2 miles on Nov. 13.

“He didn’t take to the dirt too well at Hawthorne,” Gaines said. “We can stay here on a course we know he likes.”

Dettori will ride Hibaayeb in Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf

Hibaayeb, winner of the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes in her U.S. debut at Hollywood Park, will make her next start in Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Hibaayeb, winner of the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes in her U.S. debut at Hollywood Park on Oct. 2, will be ridden by Frankie Dettori in Friday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs.

Simon Crisford, racing manager of Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing, confirmed the assignment Sunday. Dettori has ridden the 3-year-old Hibaayeb in five of her 11 starts, including a victory in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 1/2 miles on turf at Royal Ascot in England on June 17.

Zenyatta enjoys walks a day after work

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – By dawn Sunday, Zenyatta had already been out of her stall at trainer John Shirreffs’s stable at Hollywood Park for a 45-minute walk. It was to be the theme of her Sunday, a day after she worked six furlongs in 1:11.80 for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.

Zenyatta was scheduled to have three walking sessions Sunday. She was back out for another walk in the 9 o’clock hour on Sunday morning and was to be walked and grazed in the afternoon. The only unknown was how long Shirreffs and his team could delay the start of the afternoon session.

Chamberlain Bridge back on track for Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After missing a scheduled breeze Saturday morning because of an abscess in his right-front foot, Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint hopeful Chamberlain Bridge returned to the racetrack Sunday morning, when he jogged a mile the “wrong” way, or clockwise.

The abscess, an infected puss pocket in the hoof, drained through a nail hole after Chamberlain Bridge’s shoe was removed Saturday, Calhoun said.

Europeans arrive for Breeders’ Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Europeans have entered the building.

After three Godolphin-owned or associated horses arrived Saturday afternoon following a cush private charter flight, the other 19 Euros intended for Breeders’ Cup races next weekend came on five different Sallee horse vans, getting to the Churchill backstretch later Saturday night. Among the travelers, some of whom spent almost an entire day in transit, were two-time BC Mile winner Goldikova and Workforce, the Arc-winning favorite for the Turf.
