A wildfire has its own rules. What it leaves behind is like nothing anyone has seen before – unless they’ve been in a wildfire. It is not “just like a movie” or “as if a bomb had been dropped.” The aftermath of a wildfire is different from all other disasters in all regards – the sights, the smells, the textures of objects vaguely familiar, now charred and twisted by the feral flames. A wildfire is truly one of nature’s dark arts.

The following photographs offer a walk through the ashes of the seven destroyed barns at San Luis Rey Downs on the afternoon of Dec. 7, 2017. One other barn lost 12 stalls but can be restored. More than 200 Thoroughbreds occupied those barns, cared for by trainers and their crews who called San Luis Rey the best placed they’d ever done business. In the end, even paradise has its cost.
