Zenyatta's weanling dies following paddock accident

Zenyatta delivered her War Front filly in April at Lane's End Farm.

Champion Zenyatta's weanling filly by popular young commercial sire War Front was euthanized on Oct. 28 following a paddock accident.

The filly, who was born April 20, resided at Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky., where Zenyatta has been boarded since her retirement in late 2010 for owners Jerry and Ann Moss.

"She was humanely euthanized last night at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital after a paddock accident on the farm," Lane's End general manager Mike Cline wrote in a statement issued on the official Zenyatta website. "As caretakers of these Thoroughbreds, we collectively mourn the loss of this beautiful filly.”

Zenyatta is also the dam of Cozmic One, a 2-year-old colt by Bernardini, currently in training with John Shirreffs in New York; and Ziconic, a yearling Tapit colt, who has begun his early training at Mayberry Farm near Ocala, Fla. The mare was not bred for a 2015 foal.

Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and champion older female in three consecutive years, won 19 of her 20 career starts with 13 Grade 1 victories, including the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic and the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. She finished second by a head to Blame in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic in her career finale. She retired with earnings of $7,304,580, making her the all-time leader among North American females.

Sad they did not make statement of the filly's injuries,i know they can get going faster in the turnouts,Zenyatta should have been out with her filly!  Why sometimes best to keep her mother close by to help her along! Weaning I believe is done a bit too soon for these foals' & fillys! Not to blame any one person, just baby's get to moving & are not as likely to judge for themselves before a fall. So sad for this loss, then she has all the sweet angels in heaven now.  :' \      RE: PrincessZ

The filly was a weanling, so she wasn't with Zenyatta.

Horses sometimes take a bad step. They startle easily. All kinds of bad things can happen. My condolences, little one.

Very sad beautiful filly with regal blood .just goes to show that tragedy can happen anywhere at any time.life is fragile. these farms do a great job and take every precaution to ensure safety and its unfortunate that these things happen.but they do thats life.ZENYATTA has 3 foals so far two colts. by BERNADINI and TAPIT and this ill fated filly by WAR FRONT She is obviously a great mom and will probably produce many more foals.i hope they go back to WAR FRONT . I would love to see a BLAME X ZENYATTA FOAL even though I am not a big fan of inbreeding. but the TURN TO over MR PROSPECTOR X MR PROSPECTOR over TURN TO is very appealing in this case .and the history is great for a breeders cup matchup.

Lanes End takes care of Zenyatta and her foals with the utmost care. I can say that because I visited Zenyatta and Ziconic.

Evidently the idiot farm is closed for Halloween. hard to believe that so many 'aficionados' of the sport can be so blatantly stooooooopid.
