ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Several Queen’s Plate contenders put in their final works over the weekend ahead of the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, to be run over 1 1/4 miles Saturday on Woodbine’s Tapeta. As of Sunday, a bulky field of 16 was expected for the $1 million Queen’s Plate, led by Plate Trial Stakes winner Telekinesis. Telekinesis will be one of three horses in the field trained by Mark Casse. Casse also will send out Woodbine Oaks runner-up Wonder Gadot and Neepawa in search of his second career Queen’s Plate victory. Telekinesis and Wonder Gadot both worked four furlongs Friday morning, their first works since their respective starts June 9. Wonder Gadot recorded the faster time of the two, covering four furlongs in 47 seconds flat, while Telekinesis breezed the distance in 49.20. Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon will run in the Queen’s Plate for trainer Catherine Day Phillips and owner-breeders Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry. She also was on the work tab Saturday morning, breezing four furlongs in 47.20. She’ll look to become the seventh filly to complete the Woodbine Oaks-Queen’s Plate double. Holy Helena won both races last year for Stronach Stables. Stronach Stables will be looking for their second consecutive Queen’s Plate victory from Silent Poet or Real Dude. Silent Poet has won both of his starts this year for trainer Nick Gonzalez, but the Queen’s Plate will be his first start around two turns. He breezed five furlongs in 58 seconds flat Friday morning. Real Dude will enter the Queen’s Plate as a maiden, having run third in his most recent start June 9 for trainer Sid Attard. He worked six furlongs in 1:14.20 on Saturday morning. Trainer Mike Maker will send a trio of horses to the gate for the Queen’s Plate, led by Plate Trial fourth-place finisher Boyhood Dream. He’ll be joined by Marriage Counselor, who won his maiden for a $25,000 tag over 1 1/4 miles on turf in his last start June 10, and Pawnbroker, who finished fourth in his career debut over six furlongs May 28. All three horses are owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, who combined with Maker to win the 2016 Queen’s Plate with Sir Dudley Digges. Woodbine leading trainer Norm McKnight will be represented in the Queen’s Plate by Inge. Inge won the Wando Stakes via disqualification April 21 and will run in the Queen’s Plate off a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes in his most recent start May 13. He breezed four furlongs in 47 seconds flat June 19. Along with Neepawa, owner Chiefswood Stable also will run Rose’s Vision in the Queen’s Plate. Trained by Stu Simon, Rose’s Vision bounced back off of a sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes on May 13 to finish second behind Telekinesis in the Plate Trial on June 9. Chiefswood Stable recorded runner-up finishes in all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown last season. Aheadbyacentury will look to become the first horse since Norcliffe in 1976 to win the Coronation Futurity as a 2-year-old and the Queen’s Plate as a 3-year-old. Trained by John Ross, Aheadbyacentury has run third in his last two starts in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes and the Plate Trial Stakes. He breezed five furlongs in 1:01.60 on June 20 in his last work ahead of the Queen’s Plate. Also among the local contingent is Cooler Mike, who added blinkers to win an allowance over 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta on May 20. Cooler Mike is owned by trainer Nick Nosowenko and his father, Mike. The Nosowenkos will run their second horse in the Queen’s Plate after finishing 12th in 2013 with Rackman. Cooler Mike worked six furlongs in 1:11.40 on Friday morning. Three American-based horses round out the field of 16, which includes two Sam-Son Farm homebreds. Say the Word and Strike Me Down will both make the trip north for the Queen’s Plate from trainer Graham Motion’s base at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. Both horses worked six furlongs in company together Sunday morning in 1:13.00. Rushaway Stakes winner Alternative Route also will come north for trainer Al Stall Jr. Alternative Route will enter the Queen’s Plate off a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Arlington Classic on turf May 26.
