VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Riser will try and carry his substantial speed around three turns in the Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby on Saturday at Hastings. The 72nd running of the showcase race at Hastings headlines a stellar nine-race card that includes five supporting stakes. The $100,000 British Columbia Oaks is a gem in its own right, featuring a matchup between local sensation Daz Lin Dawn and Washington Oaks winner Little Dancer. Eleven horses are entered in the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity for 2-year-olds and the $50,000 S.W. Randall Plate for 3-year-olds and up. Also on tap are the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity for 2-year-old fillies and the $50,000 Delta Colleen for fillies and mares. :: Get bonus PPs for Saturday’s $25,000-guaranteed late pick four at Hastings It is by far the best card of the year at Hastings, and there is a $25,000 guarantee on the late pick four, which begins with the Jack Diamond Futurity in race 6. The 10 horses entered in the B.C. Derby will each carry 126 pounds. Post time for the derby, race 8, is 5:25 p.m. Pacific. The first three finishers from the controversial Grade 3, $150,000 Canadian Derby are entered. Chief Know It All won the 1 3/8-mile race after an eventful stretch run, with Trooper John and Double Bear dead-heating for second. A. P. Zona heads a local contingent that appears to be overmatched by the invaders. Riser is the one they will have to run down. With Eswan Flores riding, he set sprint-like fractions and just kept rolling in the $75,000 Emerald Downs Derby on July 30. Trained by Blaine Wright, Riser went into the 1 1/8-mile race at Emerald Downs off a narrow loss to his stablemate Aqua Frio in the one-mile Seattle Slew Stakes there July 2. They reversed roles in the Emerald Derby before Aqua Frio came back to finish fifth in the Canadian Derby at Northlands. Riser proved he can win at the Hastings Derby distance, but going around three turns will be a new adventure for the Ohio-bred colt by Mizzen Mast. He worked a sharp five furlongs in 58.80 seconds Tuesday at Emerald and shipped to trainer John Snow’s barn in the evening. Aaron Gryder will ride Riser from post 9. “John said he ate up well and that he was fine when he jogged over the track Wednesday morning,” Wright said. “He’s the kind of horse that shouldn’t have any trouble with the turns. One of the reasons we have Aaron Gryder riding is that he knows the track well.” Gryder rode full time at Hastings in 2013. If Riser wins, he will receive a $25,000 bonus for sweeping the Emerald Derby and B.C. Derby. Trooper John, trained by Tim Rycroft, arrived early and was full of himself when he breezed a half-mile in 48 seconds with Christine Ammann aboard Sept. 1. Ammann also is the exercise rider for the top local handicap horse Modern. Immediately following Trooper John’s work, she breezed Modern five furlongs in 1:01.60. “I was very impressed with Trooper John,” she said. “He’s not like Modern, who wants to run off with me. He’s very smart and has a great way of going.” “That’s the best thing about him,” Rycroft said. “He’s a good-minded horse and does whatever you ask him to do.” Trooper John dominated the 3-year-old division at Northlands before the Canadian Derby, winning three stakes, including a 9 1/2-length romp over Double Bear in the $50,000 Count Lathum Handicap on July 15. He will break from post 7 with his usual rider Keishan Balgobin aboard. Chief Know It All survived a jockey’s objection and stewards’ inquiry in the Canadian Derby. With Rico Walcott aboard, he drifted in midstretch and knocked Double Bear off stride. It is hard to say if Double Bear would have won the race. It is easy to say that it was a game performance by all three horses, especially Chief Know It All. He was a head in front of Double Bear at the one-mile mark when it looked like Trooper John was going to blow by him. He dug in, however, and came home fast. It was Chief Know It All’s first start for trainer Robertino Diodoro, who claimed him for $100,000 out of a runner-up finish on the turf in an optional-claiming race June 30 at Churchill Downs. He breezed a half-mile in 38.60 on Monday at Hastings. “We just wanted to give him a feel for the track,” Diodoro said. “He just ran a mile and three-eighths, so he’s fit. We’re excited about coming.” Chief Know It All drew post 3 and should get a nice trip from a forward position with Walcott riding again. Double Bear, trained by Rod Cone, will try to prove his big effort in the Canadian Derby was no fluke. The Phil Hall-trained A. P. Zona rallied to win three straight races at Hastings before being upset by Hunters Appeal in the $50,000 Sir Winston Churchill Downs Derby Trial on Aug. 7. Hunters Appeal will be picking up 15 pounds off his win in the Derby Trial. More Power to Him, third in the Emerald Derby, will be rolling late. Driller could be dangerous with a well-timed ride.
