A Revenant captures Rainbow Futurity

A Revenant kept the Rainbow Futurity tradition alive in his family with a victory in the 400-yard race for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday.

A Revenant is out of Thewayouwantmeto, who won the 2004 Rainbow Futurity. A Revenant was the 4-5 favorite to win the Rainbow Futurity, having set the fastest qualifying time in trials on July 8-9.

In the $1 million final, A Revenant won by a neck over 5-1 Paint My Pilot, who ran erratically. A Revenant was timed in 19.70 seconds.

Ridden by Cody Jensen, A Revenant broke from the outside in a field of 10. The colt broke well and was third early before taking the lead midway through the race.

Paint My Pilot ducked to the inside shortly after the start, but recovered to race at the front of the field. Paint My Pilot finished a length in front of Lethal Class, an 18-1 shot.

A Revenant, by Mr Jess Perry, is trained by Mike Joiner and owned by Ruidoso Downs chairman R.D. Hubbard, Johnny Cope, Rafter W Stables, and Henry Southway. Purchased for $152,000 as a yearling at Ruidoso last summer, A Revenant has won 3 of 4 starts and earned $604,800. His only loss was a second in the Ruidoso Futurity on June 11.

The Ruidoso Futurity was the first leg of the track’s three-race series for 2-year-olds, followed by the Rainbow Futurity. The final race, the legendary All American Futurity, will be run on Sept. 5, with time trials on Aug. 19-20.
