Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for Feb. 13, 2013

The same 20 horses who were on last week’s Derby Watch list are on this week’s list, but there is a new horse on top in Verrazano (left), largely owing to his being the lowest price among individual horses in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager last weekend. Remember, the Derby Watch committee chooses the 20 horses, but then they are ranked in order of the future line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper. Watchmaker had Verrazano as the second choice at 8-1 last week, but lowered him to 6-1 following the future wager, which made him the favorite. Violence, last week’s favorite, is now the co-second choice with Flashback on Watchmaker’s line, both at 8-1.

Violence lost his spot atop Watchmaker’s line, reflecting where he stood vis-à-vis stablemate Verrazano in the future wager. Violence is scheduled to make his 2013 debut in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream on Feb. 23.

Last week was quiet, but there could be some new names on the list after this weekend, with significant stakes on Saturday (the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate), Sunday (San Vicente at Santa Anita), and Monday (Southwest at Oaklawn). In addition, Fortify was scheduled to run on Thursday night in Dubai in the UAE 2000 Guineas.
