For Cash won the $48,000 Alberta Breeders’ Handicap for the second year in a row. He paid $3.40 for his eight-length romp over Zippity Zap in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. With Rico Walcott aboard, the classy 7-year-old son of Stephen Got Even looked comfortable sitting in third while Zippity Zap posted a quick quarter-mile time of 22.98 seconds over a drying-out track rated good. Walcott moved For Cash into a stalking position after a half-mile in 48.10 seconds. He took control of the race on the stretch turn and drew off to win in hand. Alfie rallied to finish third in the four-horse field. The final time was 1:48.05. It was For Cash’s 13th win and the winner’s share of the purse brought the gelding's lifetime earnings to $581,039. He’s been trained for most of his 39-race career by Dale Greenwood who took over his training as a 3-year-old. In his first start for Greenwood he was ridden to victory by Walcott in a maiden special weight race at Northlands in 2013. He is owned by Southview Ag. Ltd. The Breeders’ was the first of seven Alberta-bred stakes races on the Fall Classic Day card that concluded the 2017 Northlands meet. Other than the Breeders’, the purses for the stakes were $50,000. Walcott won the last two stakes, closing out the meet with a win aboard Makealittlenoise in the Beaufort for 3-year-olds. Trained by Craig Smith, the son of Whiskey Wisdom paid $10.20 for his four-length victory over Bar No Q. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:50.16. Walcott guided Shimshine to a neck victory over Regal Max in the Alberta Premier’s Futurity. The son of Wilko paid $4.00 for his gutsy win in the 6 1/2-furlong dash. It was Shimshine’s second straight stakes win for trainer Elige Bourne. He posted a final time of 1:22.68 Rey Williams brought Piper Rose from last to first in the Alberta Oaks. She paid $14.90 and posted a final time of 1:44.33 in the one-mile race. The daughter of Whiskey Wisdom is trained by Ron Smith. Williams won the Red Diamond Express Handicap with Mister Jangles, who paid $17.30. He came from a stalking position to win the 6 1/2-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up. Trained by Amber Meyaard, he posted a final time of 1:20.87. Teemans Kid took them all the way in the Sturgeon River Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. She paid $10 for her two-length score over Madam Bullet in the 6 1/2-furlong contest. Ridden by Shamaree Muir for trainer Jennifer Hunt, Teemans Kid posted a final time of 1:23.45. Smart Fix, $7.80, drew off from heavily-favored Onestaratatime in the stretch in the Fall Classic Distaff Handicap. The final time for the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares was 1:49.97. The 4-year-old daughter of Kissin Kris was ridden by Rigo Sarmiento. She is trained by Jerri Robertson.
