Post | Horse | Trainer/ Jockey | Odds and comments by Brad Free | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1. | Big Invasion | Christophe Clement Joel Rosario | 12-1 | |||
BF: Underrated late-runner won G2 at WO, would have finished closer to Motorious in May but brutal trip, price play? | ||||||
2. | Bradsell | Archie Watson Luke Morris | 12-1 | |||
BF: Group 1 winner summer in England, reportedly spun wheels on loose ground when seventh in recent G1 in Ireland | ||||||
3. | Caravel | Brad Cox Tyler Gaffalione | 6-1 | |||
BF: Won BC Turf Sprint last year KEE, underachieved both recent but both on wet turf; pace-presser will get firm SA | ||||||
4. | Tony Ann | Phil D'Amato Hector Berrios | 20-1 | |||
BF: Relished "good" going to upset Caravel at KEE, former California-based filly thrived in Kentucky, seems cut below | ||||||
5. | Live In The Dream | Adam West Sean Kirrane | 9-2 | |||
BF: Ideal fourth-place tuneup last, set blazing pace and tired six furlongs, cuts back to five, possibly speed of speed | ||||||
6. | Gear Jockey | George Arnold Jose Lezcano | 8-1 | |||
BF: Return-to-form upset in KD G2 was only second start of year, often flirted with top company, fresh, versatile, live | ||||||
7. | Nobals | Larry Rivelli Gerrardo Corales | 5-1 | |||
BF: Banged heads with and defeated top company Midwest, threat if he avoids head-to-head with Live In The Dream | ||||||
8. | Aesop's Fables | Aidan O'Brien Ryan Moore | 15-1 | |||
BF: Third by a length at long odds in prestigious Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp stamps him contender in U.S. debut | ||||||
9. | Roses for Debra | Christophe Clement Irad Ortiz, Jr. | 20-1 | |||
BF: Pace-pressing filly met her match vs. boys, distant third PRX as odds-on favorite although "yielding" provides alibi | ||||||
10. | Motorious | Phil D'Amato Flavien Prat | 4-1 | |||
BF: Top turf sprinter in Calif. rallies from behind, five furlongs SA turf okay for closers when rails down, pace to run at | ||||||
11. | Jasper Krone | Hideyuki Mori Yuga Kawada | 10-1 | |||
BF: Group 3 winner in Japan unknown commodity making first start outside his homeland, adds more speed to field | ||||||
12. | Arzak | Michael Trombetta Luis Saez | 12-1 | |||
BF: Each start better than before, back-to-back upsets include career-best G2 last, closer benefits by pace scenario | ||||||
14. | Beer Can Man (AE) | Phil D'Amato Flavien Prat | 20-1 | |||
BF: Five-furlong specialist almost always fires, notch below California top turf sprinters, last two showed he can rally | ||||||
15. | Lane Way (AE) | Richard Mandella Mike Smith | 12-1 | |||
BF: Consistent G3 winner delivered in final prep at 6 1/2F, wonder if five furlongs slightly shorter than he prefers | ||||||

The horses that compete in these championship races can claim their berths in multiple ways. The first is by winning a Breeders' Cup Challenge race. The second is through a system that allows horses to earn points based on their performance in major races throughout the year. The third way to be selected is to be chosen by a panel of experts. There are a maximum of 14 horses in each Breeders' Cup race, except the Dirt Mile and Juvenile Turf Sprint, which are limited to 12 starters.
