AUBURN, Wash. - An evenly-matched field of nine 3-year-old fillies, each eligible to be claimed for $10,000 or $9,000, will vie over 5 1/2 furlongs in Friday's featured ninth race at Emerald Downs.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Win City, last seen winning the Prince of Wales at Fort Erie July 22, will return to action at Woodbine in Saturday's Grade 3 Colonel R.S. McLaughlin Handicap.
Win City, who won his fourth stakes of the season in the Wales, tuned up for the $107,200, 1 1/8-mile McLaughlin with a five-furlong drill of 1:00.80 under regular rider Constant Montpellier here last Sunday.
"We wanted a little more out of him," said Tiller, noting that Win City's workouts generally are more leisurely. "If you don't leave the pole running with him, he doesn't work fast.
AUBURN, Wash. - Two-year-olds will again be in the spotlight on Thursday, when Emerald Downs launches into five straight days of racing that will bring its 91-day meeting to a conclusion.
Three 2-year-old races, including the six-furlong feature for $16,000 fillies who have never won twice, will grace Thursday's nine-race card. That will bring the total for the meeting to 115, easily the most ever offered at Emerald Downs.
"Our 2-year-old program has been one of the real bright spots of the 2001 season," noted director of racing Grant Holcomb.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Madison Davis, who showed promise in three Northern California starts, returns from an unsuccessful sojourn to Del Mar to head a field of five 3-year-old fillies in the $34,000 allowance feature at six furlongs at Bay Meadows Thursday.
Madison Davis made her debut at Bay Meadows in May, zipping to a four-length victory over straight maidens after dueling to the stretch. Brought back in an allowance race, she again dueled early, then drew away to win by 2 1/2 lengths.
POMONA, Calif. - Horse racing resumed Wednesday at Fairplex Park despite a bomb scare which led to the cancellation of a race.
At 2 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday, Fairplex patrons were ordered to evacuate the grandstand. A Fairplex spokeswoman said a bomb threat had been called in, and while Fairplex did not believe it to be credible, "we want to take every precaution," she said.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Grade 1 winner Jostle, who was preparing for her next start in Saturday's $300,000 Ruffian Handicap at Belmont Park, has been retired.
Trainer John Servis said he was not pleased with the way Jostle returned from her five-furlong work in 1:02.36 at Philadelphia Park on Monday.
Servis said Richard Porter, Jostle's owner, hasn't yet made a decision regarding Jostle's future, but it seemed likely Porter would sell the 4-year-old filly as a broodmare prospect. Jostle, a daughter of Brocco, retires with $1,381,682 from a record of 8-5-1 in 19 starts.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Buster's Daydream, who won three graded juvenile stakes in New York and was being pointed to Sunday's Grade 1 Futurity at Belmont Park, will not run again this year, trainer Tim Tullock said Wednesday.
Tullock said he didn't like the way Buster's Daydream was training following his fourth-place finish as the 1-5 favorite in the Ellis Park Juvenile on Aug. 18.
ELMONT, N.Y. - The connections of Woodward Stakes winner Lido Palace are scheduled to huddle later this week to determine whether to put up $800,000 to supplement the colt to next month's $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic or look at far less risky propositions such as the Japan Cup.
Owner John Amerman is scheduled to be at Belmont Park this weekend to watch Printemps run in Saturday's Grade 1 Ruffian for fillies and mares. At that time, Amerman, who owns Lido Palace with his wife, Jerry, will meet with trainer Bobby Frankel to discuss options for Lido Palace.
The Breeders' Cup is going to places it has never been before with the selection of Arlington Park in suburban Chicago and Lone Star Park in Texas as two of the next four sites of the World Thoroughbred Championships.
On Monday, Arlington Park was tentatively announced as the 2002 host, to be followed by Santa Anita in 2003, Churchill Downs in 2004, and Lone Star in 2005.
