Golden Apples defeats elders in Las Palmas

ARCADIA, Calif. - Still a 3-year-old, Golden Apples showed on Sunday that she can compete with California's top older fillies and mares on turf. Closing from last in the field of nine, Golden Apples caught pacesetter Dancingonice in the final 50 yards to win the $250,000 Las Palmas Handicap at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

For Golden Apples, it was her first start against older fillies and mares. She had won the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks and finished second in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland since arriving from Europe in late summer.

Los Alamitos: Tres Seis keeps hopes alive

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Tres Seis, second in the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Sept. 3, overcame a poor start to win the $738,900 Golden State Futurity for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos. The victory keeps Tres Seis in contention for the year-end 2-year-old championship.

Louisiana Downs: Walk in the Snow now 3 for 6

Ginger Taylor's Walk in the Snow made short work of ten fellow Louisiana-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings to win the Pelican Stakes.

Walk in the Snow won for the third time in six starts and avenged a four-length loss to Rapide in the Stardust Stakes in his previous start.

Meadowlands: One Eyed Joker trumps 'em all

East Rutherford, N.J. - One Eyed Joker was the lucky card in a wide-open and closely run $100,000 Rushing Man Stakes at the Meadowlands. Under Jose Velez Jr., One Eyed Joker won his second stakes race in four starts. He spurted past a tight pack of horses turning for home in the 1 1/16-mile turf race and barely held off Moomtazz in 1:41.64.

Meanwhile, after an easy win by Al Max Diner in the $100,000 Holly Stakes, it's safe to say the best 2-year-old fillies in New Jersey are trained by Ben Perkins Jr.

Sam Houston: Due to Win Again does just that

Due to Win Again won her second stakes race in 15 days when she held off Runaway Magic by a half-length in the $25,000 Jiffy Lube Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. It was a neck back in third to Slapstick.

Due to Win Again ($10), who won the $35,000 San Antonio Oaks at Retama Park on Oct. 20, was aggressive from the start, pressing the pace and then taking the lead on the turn for home.

Calder: Raponera upsets Powder Break at 16-1

MIAMI - Raponera, who had not won a race all season and had never won on grass, broke both streaks when she rallied to a 1 1/4-length win over Golden Saint in the $54,560 Powder Break Handicap.

Raponera ($34.80) avoided crowding to her outside leaving the gate, raced within striking distance on the backstretch, overtook the tiring leader I No Best leaving the far turn, and, after drawing clear in midstretch, withstood a closing surge by Golden Saint.

Woodbine: Catch the Ring wins in a rerun

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - In a rerun of the 2000 Canadian Oaks, Catch the Ring collared front-running Mountain Angel in the final strides to win the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes for fillies and mares.

Catch the Ring ($2.90) trailed early in the 1 1/4-mile race, as Mountain Angel set uncontested fractions. Catch the Ring commenced a four-wide rally on the far turn under Robert Landry, and won by a half-length in 2:03.62. Madame Red finished third in the eight-horse field.

"They both ran super races," said Mark Frostad, who trains the first two finishers for Sam-Son Farm.

Laurel: Favored La Reine's Terms delivers

This time, there were no traffic problems to hinder La Reine's Terms. Making amends for a near-collision that wiped him out of contention as the favorite in last month's Maryland Million Turf, La Reine's Terms ($7.40) bounced back and won the $75,000 Find Handicap.

New York shipper My Request rallied to finish second, a half-length behind.

Hawthorne: Galic Boy makes the grade

STICKNEY, Ill. - Thirty-one starts into his career, the 6-year-old Galic Boy won his first graded stakes race, beating heavily favored Where's Taylor in the Grade 3, $150,000 Robert Carey Memorial Handicap.

Galic Boy got a perfect trip under jockey Ray Sibille, passing the tiring Where's Taylor in deep stretch before drawing away to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Where's Taylor finished second by a neck over Good Journey.

Rochelle's Terms stuns 3-5 Strolling Belle

ELMONT, N.Y. - Rochelle's Terms, the longest price in the field at 26-1, came with a late run to win Saturday's $108,500 Turnback the Alarm at Aqueduct.

Rochelle's Terms collared Resort with less than a sixteenth remaining for a half-length win in the Grade 3 race. Strolling Belle, the 3-5 favorite in the six-horse field of fillies and mares, had a nightmare trip and finished third, two lengths behind Resort.
