McGaughey takes two shots at Long Island

Shug McGaughey is expected to send out the uncoupled entry of Krisada and Kris Pit in Saturday's Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct.

While both are daughters of outstanding grass sire Kris S., only Krisada has proven herself on the turf with a 4-2-4 record from 16 turf starts. Although Krisada has not won a stakes, she is coming off a solid third-place finish in the Dowager Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 14 where she was beaten only a head over a yielding turf course.

Lady Shari can breathe easy again

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Dave Cotey had mixed feelings about Lady Shari's first trip out of town.

Cotey, who trains the 2-year-old Lady Shari and is the co-owner along with Hugh Galbraith and Derek Ball, initially had to be reasonably happy with her second-place finish in the $100,600 Polly Drummond Stakes at Delaware Park on Oct. 14.

But Cotey, after conferring with rider Constant Montpellier and learning the results of a postrace veterinary examination, came away believing that Lady Shari definitely should have won the 1 1/16-mile race.

Do you dare shun favorite?

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Horseplayers are not necessarily risk-takers. This is no contradiction. Safety-minded bettors habitually seek comfort in the familiar, which is one reason Nanogram will be strongly backed in the seventh-race feature Thursday at Hollywood Park.

Silent Emotion may get cooked

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - While stakes-winning Silent Emotion typifies the kind of runner that Ken and Sarah Ramsey enjoy owning and watching, the lesser lights of the couple's stable are about to find new homes through the claim box or private sale.

The Ramseys, who have won or tied for leading owner at the last three Churchill Downs meets, are in the process of culling their cheaper stock with the goal of buying the type of horses that can win major races. The result will be fewer horses, so the Ramseys' main trainer, Chuck Simon, will be seeking outside clients.

Deed I Do fresh and ready

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Deed I Do, stakes-placed at 2 and 3, has spent more time in her Belmont Park barn than at the races this year, but she could be ready to fire big on Thursday at Aqueduct.

Deed I Do, a 4-year-old who showed promise in her first two seasons on the track, makes only her third start of the year in a seven-furlong allowance race, which drew five fillies and mares. The sixth race, the feature on the nine-race card, carries a $54,000 purse.

Heavyweight Champ will winter in California

JAMAICA, N.Y. - On a cold and blustery Tuesday morning at Belmont Park, trainer John Terranova was talking about warm and sunny California, where he will send a string of eight to 10 horses, including his good 2-year-old, Heavyweight Champ, this winter.

Heavyweight Champ will leave Monday for Hollywood Park, where he will run in the $100,000 Hollywood Prevue on Nov. 17. Terranova said other horses from his stable would join Heavyweight Champ, although as of Tuesday, the trainer hadn't made a final decision as to who those horses will be.

Kimberlite Pipe skips Autumn Cap to rest for next year

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Kimberlite Pipe, who had been expected to add some sizzle to Saturday's Autumn Handicap at Woodbine, will not see action again this season.

"He's gone home," said trainer Mike Wright Jr., noting that Kimberlite Pipe is in good order but already has raced 11 times this year and will be freshened up at nearby Huntington Stud Farm. "He'll start training in February in Maryland, and be ready for opening week here next year."

Top turf meet gets under way

Benoit & Associates
Hollywood Park's fall meet offers two main highlights - the three-day Autumn Turf Festival; and two Grade 1's for 2-year-olds, the Hollywood Futurity and the Hollywood Starlet.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Hollywood Park, which annually presents some of the best turf racing in California, begins its autumn meet Wednesday a little bit like a sitting duck. One look at the opening-day card - which averages seven runners per race - and you have to wonder whether racing secretary Martin Panza has any concerns.
