An outside shot at 200 wins

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Art Sherman, with 192 wins entering Wednesday's racing, has an outside shot at 200 victories for the year. King Farouk will try to get him one win closer in Friday's Bay Meadows feature, a first-level allowance race at six furlongs.

The 3-year-old ran third in his debut to Awesome Humor, who then came right back to beat winners. King Farouk won his second start, scampering home as the odds-on choice in a $62,500 maiden claimer Dec. 8 at Hollywood Park.

Apprentice Martin Garcia has won at a 22-percent clip in 2005.

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows is frequently referred to as Baze Meadows, given the dominance of Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze.

But more than a few people believe that Baze's streak of 25 straight Bay Meadows riding titles could be in jeopardy at the 31-day holiday meeting that opened Monday. Why? The presence of talented apprentice rider Martin Garcia.

Grecian no secret this time

Lake welcomes back 'Matt'

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Sprints on Aqueduct's inner dirt track don't come much tougher than Thursday's featured eighth race, a $49,000 dash with third-level allowance conditions and an optional claiming price of $75,000.

The nine sprinters entered have combined for 56 wins and earnings approaching $2.5 million. The field will be reduced by at least one, because the Richard Dutrow-trained entry of shippers Silver Gun and Call the Lord both have Mike Luzzi named to ride, so one must be scratched.

Fate spares Palace Rumor

When trainer Burl McBride decided not to ship Palace Rumor back to Ellis Park after she raced at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5, he might have saved her life.

That night, at about 2 a.m., a tornado ripped through the Ellis backstretch, and McBride took the worst of things. Two of his horses - horses he owned himself - were killed, and four others injured so badly that they could no longer race. The only one left standing was Palace Rumor, who was spending the night a couple hours away in Louisville, Ky.
