Point Determined scores victory

ALBANY, Calif. - Point Determined ($2.40), considered one of trainer Bob Baffert's primary Kentucky Derby hopefuls, scored a 1 1/2 victory in an $80,000 optional claimer at one mile Friday at Golden Gate Fields.

A $750,000 Barretts purchase last March by Bob and Beverly Lewis, Point Determined won for the second time in four career starts.

He was flat-footed at the break and got away last under jockey Russell Baze. He sat off Dr. Einstein and R Fat Man, while racing three wide all the way around the track.

160 nominated to Ky. Oaks

Churchill Downs on Friday released the lists of nominations for the Kentucky Oaks and Woodford Reserve, the two Grade 1 races that help anchor Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill.

Every top 3-year-old filly is named to the $500,000 Oaks, which will be run May 5, while the same can fairly be said about the turf horses named to the $400,000 Woodford Reserve on Derby Day, May 6.

Glory' looks to remain unbeaten

PORTLAND, Ore. - My Crowning Glory will carry 128 pounds when she takes on nine challengers in Sunday's $6,000 Portland Meadows Quarter Horse Championship at 440 yards.

My Crowning Glory, a 6-year-old mare trained by Wayne Burger, will be seeking to remain undefeated through her sixth start at the current meet. Dating back to last season, she has won eight straight starts here. Her local win streak was interrupted by a pair of losses last summer in California.

'Big Apple' goes for stakes

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Despite Big Apple Daddy's solid record over Aqueduct's inner track, trainer Bruce Levine says he can't wait to get him onto the outer track or even to Belmont.

Still, Sunday's $65,000 Hollie Hughes Stakes for statebred sprinters is too good of an opportunity to pass up getting his first stakes win. Big Apple Daddy, who is 2 for 4 over the inner track, faces six rivals in the six-furlong Hollie Hughes.

10 herpes cases at Fair Hill

Ten horses based at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland have tested positive for equine herpesvirus, the highly contagious disease that has proven difficult to contain in the state since an outbreak early in January.

None of the horses is showing any clinical signs of the disease, which attacks a horse's upper respiratory and neurological systems, according to officials with the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the training center. The horses are all stabled in one barn at the training center.

Desormeaux to move to East Coast

Barbaro, winner of the Holy Bull on Feb. 4, will go straight to the $1 million Florida Derby on April 1 for his final Kentucky Derby prep.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, a mainstay on the West Coast through most of his career, has decided to leave California and move his tack to the East Coast, beginning with a brief stay at Gulfstream Park toward the end of March.

Desormeaux, 35, said the balance of power in horse racing has shifted from the West Coast to the East in recent years, and believes it would be in his best interests to ride in the East. As a result, he plans to take up permanent residence in New York once he leaves Gulfstream, shortly after the Florida Derby on April 1.

Scrappy T tunes up for season debut

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Scrappy T, a multiple-stakes-winning 3-year-old of 2005 and the runner-up in the Preakness, began working towards his 4-year-old debut Friday by breezing three furlongs in 37.96 seconds over the Belmont Park training track.

Grade 3 Azeri next target for Round Pond

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - It looks like the country's best fillies and mares will have Round Pond to deal with this year. Round Pond turned in an exceptional comeback race at Oaklawn on Thursday, when in her first start since July she easily won a six-furlong optional claiming race and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 102.

Next up for Round Pond is the Grade 3, $175,000 Azeri Breeders' Cup here on March 11. From there, she is scheduled to return to Grade 1 company, in the $500,000 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn on April 8.

Frisco Star should improve in stakes debut

ALBANY, Calif. - Frisco Star makes his stakes debut at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday in the $40,000-added Novato, an overnight stakes.

The colt has four rivals in the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds, including stakes-placed Barber, who finished a head behind him on Jan. 26 at Bay Meadows. The others are Midwesterner, a sensational debut winner, Wilmore, and Toss the Pearls.
