Turf Paradise: Muir Beach by a nose

Muir Beach, 4-5 favorite, won the $40,000 Desert Sky Handicap at Turf Paradise by a nose.

Ridden by Steve Gomez for trainer Dan McFarlane, Muir Beach swung out for the stretch drive and just outnodded Shadowy Waters in the final jump. Muir Beach ($3.80) finished a mile on turf in 1:36.32.

Shadowy Waters was almost four clear of third-place Blazing Bartok, the early pacesetter.

Mountaineer: Outcashem wires

The odds-on Outcashem, trained by Scott Lake, led all the way winning the $75,000 Panhandle Handicap at Mountaineer Race Track. Under Travis Dunkelberger, he defeated Yucatan by three-quarters of a length, with Danieltown another length back in third.

Outcashem ($3.40) covered the five furlongs in 57.86 seconds.

Evangeline: 'Watchem' sets mark

Watchem Smokey solidified his position atop the handicap division at Evangeline Downs with a record-setting performance in the $75,000 John Henry Stakes. His final clocking of 1:36.61 for the mile bettered Evangeline's previous record by a full second. Commander Buck finished a game second, 1 3/4 lengths back, followed by Pressed and early pacesetter Wild Notions.

Watchem Smokey ($4.80) was ridden by Kerwin Clark for trainer Brandon Marks.

For Carroll, two big steps forward

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Last weekend's $151,200 Fury and $150,800 Queenston had added significance in the grand scheme of things here at Woodbine. The Fury, a seven-furlong race for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies Sunday, was the first major local stepping-stone to the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on June 11. The Queenston, a seven-furlong race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds Saturday, was the first major local prep for the $1 million Queen's Plate at 1 1/4 miles on June 25.

Streaking Baker has sharp pair

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Reade Baker, Woodbine's hottest trainer, will send out contenders in both allowance races on Wednesday evening's eight-race card.

Baker entered Artagnan in the seventh race, a first-level allowance for 3-year-olds.

Artagnan was well beaten when he debuted in a Nov. 27 maiden special, and then got the winter off. He relished the sloppy conditions in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden dash in his season opener, scoring by nearly four lengths in a quick clocking, which earned him an impressive Beyer Speed Figure of 88.

Attendance, fields expected to be bigger

SAN MATEO, Calif. - If racing fans are half as excited about Wednesday's start of a 28-day spring racing meeting at Bay Meadows as track president Jack Liebau, business will be booming.

The meet will include eight stakes, three with $100,000 purses, and could see a sprint rematch between Eclipse Award champion Lost in the Fog and Carthage in the Grade 3, $125,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint on June 4. Carthage defeated Lost in the Fog in the Golden Gate Fields Sprint on April 22, when Lost in the Fog made his 2006 debut.

Gumboots takes Fury Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Gumboots ($3.80) established herself as one of the favorites for the June 11 Woodbine Oaks Sunday in the $151,200 Fury Stakes.

Gumboots set a moderate early pace in the seven-furlong test for Ontario-foaled 3-year-old fillies, and was joined on the lead by Mayan Magic and Dream Lover through a half in :46.38 seconds. She took control exiting the turn, and held a persistent Like a Gem at bay in the stretch to score by a neck, in a final time of 1:24.13. Strike Softly was third in the eight-horse field.

Coach Jimi Lee captures Prairie Express

ALTOONA, Iowa- Coach Jimi Lee ($5.40), returning from a 5 1/2-month layoff, dueled through fast fractions and scored a game half length victory over 4/5 favorite Semaphore Man in Saturday's $50,000 Prairie Express at Prairie Meadows.

Under jockey Eduardo Perez, Coach Jimi Lee dueled through a half mile in 43.87 seconds before clocking the 6-furlongs in 1:09.01. The win was Coach Jim Lee's 13th from 35 career starts. Coach Jimi Lee, a 6-year-old gelded son of Roar, has now earned $697,068.

Rachelsarompin upsets Richland Hills Farm

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Rachelsarompin upset the $50,000 Richland Hills Farm Stakes at 20-1 on Saturday when she powered to a three and three quarter length win over favorite White She Devil in front of a crowd of 16,445 at Lone Star Park.

Rachelsarompin ($42) broke on top and settled in behind White She Devil, who set fractions of 22.01 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.15 for the half-mile mark over the sloppy track. Rachelsarompin overtook the leader in the stretch, and went on to cover the six furlongs for 3-year-old fillies in 1:10.92.
