Shifty She has Pallas looking ahead

Shifty She has won two stakes in a row, including the Ginger Punch (above). A strong effort in the Monroe Stakes could earn her a trip to Kentucky Downs.

Chris Pallas experienced the big-time with Mambo Meister and liked it. It has taken longer than he would have preferred, but Pallas might finally be primed for a return to major races with a mare named Shifty She.

“She’s special,” said Pallas, a longtime Fort Lauderdale resident and licensed pharmacist who has owned and bred horses in Florida for more than 20 years.

Shifty She has earned 88 Beyer Speed Figures in back-to-back stakes victories at Gulfstream Park in South Florida, where on Saturday she figures as a solid favorite in the $75,000 Monroe.

Jockey Leo Salles suspended for rest of Woodbine meet

Jockey Leo Salles will not appeal a lengthy suspension for careless riding that bars him from competing at Woodbine for the balance of the meet, until Dec. 5.

Salles was on Arbeit when they impeded Bodie on the far turn in a maiden special weight route on the main track July 11. Keveh Nicholls was unseated but not seriously injured on Bodie, and then missed a week of riding engagements. The stewards took Salles off his remaining mounts on the July 11 card and then issued the suspension on July 15.

Unbeaten sprinters eye Woodbine Oaks

Lorena wins her stakes debut in the Fury Stakes.

Next Sunday’s $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, a 1 1/8-mile test for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies, could have two unbeaten sprinters in the lineup, Lorena and Jilli Marie.

Lorena, by hot Ontario sire Souper Speedy, aced her stakes debut in the seven-furlong Fury here July 10, winning in front-running style over an anti-speed track.

“She’s just so genuine,” trainer Stu Simon said. “She’s the real deal. When you look at the schedule, you run in the Oaks, and then she runs back in the Bison City Stakes or the sales stakes. I honestly think there’s no doubt that she’ll two-turn.”

Drain the Clock works five furlongs in 59.24 Tuesday morning over the main track at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Tuesdays are generally the quietest day around the racetrack, with work tabs usually on the light side barring unforeseen circumstances, such as two consecutive days of rain which left both the main track and Oklahoma training surface wet and for the most part off-limits to workers here on both Sunday and Monday mornings.

Bizzee Channel wins battle with Two Emmys; will move on to Mister D. Stakes

Bizzee Channel came up the rail and then outfinished Two Emmys to take the Arlington Stakes.

In a battle of 5-year-old English Channel geldings, it was Bizzee Channel up by a neck over Two Emmys in the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes last Saturday.

Two Emmys led for much of the 1 3/16-mile Arlington, but Bizzee Channel and Jareth Loveberry slipped through along the fence in upper stretch, and the two horses engaged in a prolonged duel from which Bizzee Channel emerged victorious.

The margin was narrow, but Larry Rivelli, Bizzee Channel’s trainer, said his horse had plenty left in the tank.

Naval Laughter's surprise Modesty performance sends her to the Beverly D.

Coady Photography
Locally based Naval Laughter wins the Grade 3 Modesty by a half-length in her stakes debut at 8-1.

When Naval Laughter won an Arlington maiden race on June 3 by almost 20 lengths, earning a stakes-level 96 Beyer Speed Figure, she seemed, more than anything, like a curiosity. The filly hadn’t raced in 19 months and went to the lead over Arlington’s speed-favoring Polytrack while facing a suspect group of non-winners, circumstances ripe for a performance that might not truly have represented Naval Laughter’s baseline.
