Stakes-filled week critical for Brisset stable

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Rodolphe Brisset is in Saratoga this week, and how the four horses he brought to run in stakes over an eight-day period fare will determine the length of his stay in upstate New York.

Brisset, who was to run Demodog in Friday’s Grade 3 Lake George, is scheduled to send out longshot Rockpaperscissors in Saturday’s Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks, logical contender Crystal Ball in Sunday’s Grade 3 Shuvee, and the improving Harvard in next Friday’s $100,000 Curlin Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Ginobili comes to life, earns Pat O'Brien start

Ginobili's 9 3/4-length romp last Saturday has earned him a start in the Pat O'Brien Stakes.

The 4-year-old gelding Ginobili won for the first time in 23 months with a remarkable 9 3/4-length score in a one-mile allowance race last Saturday at Del Mar.

Ginobili earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 104, which trainer Richard Baltas described as “a really nice surprise.”

The victory is likely to lead to his first appearance in a stakes in 18 months in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs on Aug. 28 at Del Mar.

Whatmakessammyrun will shorten up, point to Kentucky Downs

Whatmakessammyrun, fifth as the favorite in the one-mile Oceanside, will shorten up in a rich stakes at Kentucky Downs.

The Santa Anita stakes winner Whatmakessammyrun, fifth as the 2-1 favorite in the Oceanside Stakes at a mile on turf July 16, will return to a sprint at Kentucky Downs in September.

Whatmakessammyrun was beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Flashiest in the Oceanside Stakes, his first start since a win in the Desert Code Stakes for 3-year-olds at six furlongs on turf on June 6 at Santa Anita. Trainer Mark Glatt said Whatmakessammyrun will be pointed to the Grade 2 Franklin-Simpson Stakes, a $600,000 race for 3-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs on turf on Sept. 11.

Filly on the rise Robin Sparkles goes in Caress Stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Nearly a year after she won her maiden for a $40,000 claiming tag here last summer, Robin Sparkles will make her graded stakes debut in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Caress Stakes for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf.

Robin Sparkles, a New York-bred daughter of Elusive Quality, has five wins and a second from six starts on turf. Her lone stakes victory came in the off-the-turf Mount Vernon Stakes for New York-breds in the mud on May 31. On June 24, she won an open-company allowance race, running six furlongs in 1:07.14.

Malathaat has only three opponents in Coaching Club American Oaks

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Malathaat, the undefeated winner of the Kentucky Oaks, will face only three rivals when she returns to the races in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga.

With only four runners, the CCA Oaks has been carded as race 5 on the 11-race card.

Following Wolf Hill victory, The Critical Way will point to Parx Dash

The Wolf Hill was The Critical Way's second consecutive stakes win. Trainer Jose Delgado will not point him to the Parx Dash.

The Critical Way won for the sixth time in 10 starts since Jose Delgado took over his training when he got home by a half-length on June 17 in the $98,000 Wolf Hill Stakes on the Haskell undercard at Monmouth Park.

Delgado and Monster Racing Stables, The Critical Way’s owner, considered a trip to Saratoga, but Delgado said Wednesday that the $200,000 Parx Dash on Aug. 24 now seems the likely spot.

As Time Goes By works for Clement Hirsch

DEL MAR, Calif. – As Time Goes By, winner of two Grade 2 stakes for fillies and mares at Santa Anita in spring, worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds on Wednesday at Del Mar for a potential start in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Stakes on Aug. 1.

Owned by the Coolmore syndicate and trained by Bob Baffert, As Time Goes By won the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on May 22 by a nose over This Tea, who has since been retired because of injury.

Del Mar to sell general admission tickets

DEL MAR, Calif. – General admission tickets will be available at Del Mar on Friday for the first time this summer.

On opening day, July 16, through Sunday, racegoers were required to purchase seats in advance and weren’t allowed to attend by walking up and buying a general admission ticket.

Track officials said the resumption of general admission will allow customers to make last-minute plans to attend racing through the end of the meeting on Sept. 6.

Nimbostratus goes for new owner in San Clemente Stakes

The stakes-placed filly Nimbostratus, claimed for a track-record $150,000 on May 22 at Santa Anita, was recently purchased by SF Racing in advance of Saturday’s Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar.

Nimbostratus was claimed in May by Mathilde Powell, wife of trainer Leonard Powell. Wednesday, Leonard Powell said SF Racing purchased Nimbostratus privately earlier this month.

Shedaresthedevill will travel to Del Mar on July 28 for the Aug. 1 Clement Hirsch, a Win and You're In for the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Del Mar.

Following one more workout scheduled for the coming weekend at Ellis Park, the star filly Shedaresthedevil will be flown to California for her next start in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch, to be run Aug. 1 at Del Mar.
