Two Step Salsa at rest - for now

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Two Step Salsa is a racehorse, not a machine. And on Monday morning, one day after the colt's impressive victory in the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap, trainer Julio Canani said it is premature to add Two Step Salsa to a list of probable starters for the Grade 2, $350,000 Swaps Stakes for 3-year-olds on July 12.

"He ran hard, he didn't finish his feed [Sunday night], and he's been lying down all morning," Canani said. "He already has run three times here, and how many horses can do that? Look what happened to Big Brown."

Sloppy prep good enough

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Mary Hartmann said she thought about scratching Presious Passion when the Battlefield Stakes came off the turf Sunday at Monmouth Park.

She opted to run in the slop, and the 5-year-old Presious Passion overcame trouble in the first turn to get second, 8 1/4 lengths behind Call My Bluff.

More importantly, Presious Passion got a needed prep before the biggest challenge of his career - Monmouth's Grade 1 United Nations Stakes on July 5.

Frankel sensitive about weight for Ginger Punch

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bobby Frankel has Ginger Punch's last two starts of the year figured out, it's the next one or two before then that literally will weigh heavy on the trainer's mind.

Ginger Punch, the defending champion older mare, cruised to a 7 3/4-length victory in last Saturday's Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap here under an impost of 123 pounds. With virtually all of the upcoming graded events in the division run as handicaps, Frankel is leery of running in races where she has to carry too much weight.

Southern Exchange hits a home run

But when the smoke had cleared, it was Southern Exchange, based at Woodbine with trainer Greg De Gannes, who won by daylight under jockey Jono Jones to run his record to 2 for 2.
