Wolfson's finest moment - almost

MIAMI - Last Saturday wasn't the biggest day of Marty Wolfson's training career. But it came pretty close.

Wolfson sent out the winners of four stakes races on Calder's program, including three of the four $100,000 events that served as preps for the rich Summit of Speed card here on July 12. Wolfson, who moved into third place on the all-time stakes victories list at Calder with 45, won the Ponche Handicap with Rockerfeller, the Unbridled Stakes with Golden Spikes, the U Can Do It Handicap with Dixie Dreamer, and the $36,000 Big Bubble overnight stakes with Mysterious Pientre.

Two Plate prospects work five furlongs

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Deputiformer and Dylan's Choice both worked five furlongs here at Woodbine on Tuesday morning and are slated to be among 15 horses entered in Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate.

The draw for the Queen's Plate, a 1 1/4-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds, will take place here Thursday in the trackside tent due to soggy conditions in the usual walking-ring location.

A double-draw method will be employed, with the connections first drawing for their order of post position and then choosing their posts in sequence.

Cougar Cat long overdue

When your father is the prolific sire Storm Cat and your mother is four-time Grade 1 winner Excellent Meeting, it's important for you to win a stakes. Cougar Cat has had some close calls, and on Saturday his trainer, Ronny Werner, hopes he can "get the monkey off his back" in the $50,000 Temperence Hill at Louisiana Downs.

Cougar Cat will start as one of the top choices in the six-furlong Temperence Hill. The race shares the spotlight with a pair of turf routes for 3-year-olds, the $50,000 Pair of Deuces and the $50,000 Little Treasure.

Fatalo, Suffolk executive, dies

Joseph Fatalo, vice president of operations at Suffolk Downs and a longtime employee of the track, died Sunday from melanoma at his home in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. He was 66.

Colonial Turf Cup draws 10

The Grade 3, $600,000 Colonial Turf Cup at Colonial Downs in Virginia on Saturday attracted a field of 10 3-year-olds when it was drawn on Monday, including Court Vision, the winner of two graded stakes as a 2-year-old last year.

The Colonial Turf Cup is the first leg of a four-race series worth $5 million in purses and bonuses to any horse who can win all four races. The others are the July 19 Virginia Derby at Colonial, the Aug. 9 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park, and the Oct. 5 Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park. Colonial Downs sponsors the bonus.

Churchill fined $15K

The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority has fined Churchill Downs Inc. $15,000 in an agreement reached between the two parties regarding Churchill's decision to hire an assistant starter specifically to handle one horse, Pyro, in the Kentucky Derby, the racing authority said Monday after a meeting.

Pitts liked Einstein's Foster finish

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Helen Pitts said she was proud of the effort that Einstein gave Saturday in the Stephen Foster Handicap when the horse got up in the final stride to get second from Barcola.

Pitts, the former trainer of the Foster winner, Curlin, said she believed Einstein "maybe could've finished even closer if the pace hadn't been so slow," referring to fractions of 25.01 seconds, 49.28, and 1:13.41, "but I think we were going to be second, regardless."

Charles Town: Shesdebonairess returns for a win

Lincoln: My Hobby all the way
