Lovelace goes from auto worker to jockey at Louisiana Downs

Jockey Austin Lovelace will be riding in a race for the first time in more than six years Sunday at Louisiana Downs, but he has not been too far removed from the track. At least geographically. Lovelace had been working at an automotive company in Shreveport, La., until this past spring, when the plant closed. He then returned to his racing roots, began galloping horses, and on Sunday has been named to ride Dark Tunnel in the third race for trainer Charlie Hukill. It will be Lovelace’s first mount since May 20, 2004.

Ellis Park handle slips in meet's early days

Fields at Ellis Park have been among the biggest in North America in recent weeks, with about 9.5 horses per field. Still, that hasn’t translated to a surge in all-sources handle, which seems symptomatic of the financial malaise enveloping the racing industry in general and Kentucky racing in particular.

Gold for Cash lands in much softer spot at Arlington

Gold for Cash dared to match a few strides with Kantharos and paid the price. Now comes a considerably less demanding spot, a first-level allowance, a race that trainer Larry Demeritte is hoping will allow one of his prize 2-year-olds to resume his winning ways.

“That last one was a little tough for him,” Demeritte said, referring to the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs, where Kantharos showed himself to be a potential superstar in a 9 1/2-length triumph. “This race should be a lot better for him.”

Golden Stripe, Preservata clash for third time in Winnipeg Sun

Golden Stripe, who put an end to Preservata’s seven-race win streak in the July 1 Canada Day at Assiniboia Downs, will be looking to duplicate that dominance in Sunday’s $30,000 Winnipeg Sun.

Preservata was the defending champion in the Canada Day and also captured last year’s Winnipeg Sun, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares.

Sunday’s program, which begins at 1:15 p.m. Central, also features an interesting undercard which includes a $6,000 claiming race at three furlongs and a starter allowance for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles.
