Marr loaded with statebreds for big day at Ruidoso

Peppers Pride began her assault on the New Mexico-bred stakes program back in 2005, when she won the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity during Zia Racing Festival at Ruidoso Downs. Fast-forward to 2010, and her trainer, Joel Marr, is still attacking the program. He will start seven horses on this year's Festival card of 10 stakes for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Purses for the races total $1.1 million, making Sunday's program one of the richest of the meet at Ruidoso.

Cost of Freedom looks sharp for Bing Crosby

DEL MAR, Calif. – The future is always now for Cost of Freedom, the top sprinter in California and the horse to beat in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes on Sunday at Del Mar.

When he is sharp, like he is now, few can beat Cost of Freedom. As for tomorrow, don’t ask.

“Long-term planning isn’t really for him,” trainer John Sadler said. “If he’s going good, you space his races and hope you are around for the big one.”

Discreetly Mine heads Amsterdam

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – What seemed to be shaping up as a relatively short field for Monday’s Grade 2 Amsterdam grew to 10 3-year-olds when entries were drawn for the 6 1/2-furlong dash Friday.

As expected, Discreetly Mine will top the lineup. Discreetly Mine has won the Grade 3 Jersey Shore and finished second in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens since his 13th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, and trainer Todd Pletcher is now focused on mapping out a sprint campaign for the homebred during the second half of the season.

“Sprinting might be his niche,” Pletcher said.
