Saratoga: Motion eyes Hirsch with Sanagas

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Following Sanagas’s 2 1/4-length victory in Friday’s $81,000 John’s Call Stakes, trainer Graham Motion said the German-bred gelding earned a shot in a graded stakes.

On Saturday, Motion said that race would be the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park on Oct. 1.

“It’s the time of year you got to find out what you got,” Motion said.

Motion said the eight weeks between races would benefit Sanagas because “there’s not much of him.”

Saratoga: Owner Schwartz injured in golf cart accident

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Less than a week from his 80th birthday, owner Herbert Schwartz was injured in a golf cart accident Friday morning on the backstretch.

Schwartz, who turns 80 next Thursday, was in his golf cart at the far turn of the main track when he was hit head-on by another cart driven by Jason Beides, agent for jockey Jose Lezcano. According to Beides, both carts were in motion at the time of impact.

“I was trying to get out of his way and we went the same way,” Beides said.

Saratoga: Funny Proposition set for Adirondack

Funny Proposition, a debut winner at Churchill Downs for trainer Mark Casse, completed preparations for a start in next Sunday’s Grade 2, $150,000 Adirondack Stakes for 2-year-old fillies by working five furlongs in 1:02.15 on Saturday morning.

After working twice over the main track with another horse, Saturday’s move was done by herself.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – It’s Tricky and Inglorious, among the leaders of North America’s 3-year-old filly division, tuned up for a showdown in the Grade 1, $500,000 Alabama Stakes here Aug. 20 by putting in workouts Saturday morning over their respective home tracks.

At Saratoga, It’s Tricky breezed four furlongs in 49.21 seconds about 5:45 a.m. It was her first workout since she won the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks here July 23. Prior to that, It’s Tricky won the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont on June 11.

Wear the Crown preps for Presque Isle Mile

Wear the Crown will be using the seventh race at Presque Isle Downs on Tuesday as a prep for the $250,000 Presque Isle Mile on Sept. 9, trainer Tim Hamm said. Tuesday’s race is a no-conditions allowance at a mile over Tapeta with a purse of $53,000.

“The timing isn’t perfect, but we wanted to get another two-turn race over the surface before the Mile September 9.” Hamm said. “There is a three-other-than in four days, but I wanted to make sure we could get him in, so we went here.”

Del Mar: Mighty Caroline sets sights on Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

DEL MAR, Calif. – In most years, the winner of the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar is considered a long-term prospect for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, with the hope of bidding for the division championship.

This year, owner John Liviakis and trainer Melody Conlon have a slightly different plan. They won the $150,000 Sorrento Stakes on Friday with Mighty Caroline, whom they consider a long-term prospect for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will be run the same day at Churchill Downs.

“If we’re lucky enough,” Liviakis said.

Saratoga: Sky Blazer looks sharp for Gleaming Stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The threat of inclement weather over the weekend and into Monday prompted the racing office to tinker with Saratoga’s stakes schedule. The Signature Stallions Waya Stakes, originally scheduled – but not drawn – for Monday has been carded for Wednesday instead.

The Monday feature is now the $75,000 Gleaming Stakes and has been carded as the first race on a nine-race program that features four other races scheduled for the turf, many of which have a plethora of main-track-only entrants.

Saratoga: Deluxe's U.S. debut delayed as she is scratched from De La Rose

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The highly anticipated North American debut of the royally-bred filly Deluxe will have to wait.

Deluxe was scratched out of Saturday’s $75,000 De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga because of a high muscle enzyme count, trainer Bill Mott said.

"She tied up about 10 days ago and her muscle enzymes are still a bit high," said Mott, who trains Deluxe for Juddmonte Farms. "We drew blood yesterday and it was slightly off kilter. It’s nearly back to normal but we decided if everything wasn’t perfect we weren’t going to run."

Ten older horses, led by Cape Blanco and Gio Ponti, have been pre-entered in the 29th running of the Arlington Million, which will be run next Saturday as the annual showcase event at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill.
