Zia Park: Man arrested after driving truck around racetrack

Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M., became a racing strip for a wayward driver over the weekend, when a man broke through the gap, raced around the track in his truck, and was later charged with drunk driving, according to a report by the local Fox television affiliate KRQE.

Churchill Downs: Groupie Doll will be getting a rest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On a Kentucky Derby weekend of impressive performances, few horses were better than Groupie Doll, the 4-year-old filly who ran off to a 7 1/4-length, record-setting romp in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff on the Saturday undercard at Churchill Downs.

“It was so nice to win on Derby Day, especially the way she did it,” trainer Buff Bradley said Wednesday.

Hollywood Park: Husband's Folly experiments in turf route

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Proven as a turf sprinter, Husband’s Folly starts in a $54,000 allowance race over 1 1/16 miles at Betfair Hollywood Park on Friday evening, a distance that trainer Mike Puype has been eager to try.

Husband’s Folly has one victory in seven starts, a maiden race on Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in February 2011. Earlier this year, the 4-year-old Husband’s Folly was third and second in optional claimers for California-breds on the hillside turf course, closing from the back of the field in both starts.

A large group of friends, family, horsemen, officials as well as current and former members of the local jockey colony surrounded Perrodin in the winner’s circle he had visited countless times as a rider.

The $32,000 headliner at a mile on the turf carries no conditions other than the statebred and sex restrictions and is a prep for the $50,000 Honeymoon Stakes, slated for June 2.

Los Alamitos: Blackberry Czech fastest qualifier to Kindergarten Futurity

The bloodlines of the Quarter Horse Blackberry Czech gave owner-breeder Salvador Pimienta and trainer Felix Gonzalez the confidence to try the filly in the time trials for the Kindergarten Futurity at Los Alamitos last Sunday.

The reward is the role of fastest qualifier for Blackberry Czech to the $268,200 Kindergarten on May 20, one of seven fillies to qualify for the 10-horse final.

Woodbine: Lexington winner All Squared Away ships in for Marine

All Squared Away, 70-1 upset winner of the Lexington Stakes last time out, is coming to Woodbine for Saturday's Marine Stakes.

Saturday’s $150,000 Marine Stakes, living up to its name, has attracted three shippers from south of the border.

All Squared Away, based in Kentucky with trainer Wesley Ward, heads the list of invaders. In his last start, and his debut for the Ward barn, All Squared Away was a 70-1 winner of the Grade 3 Lexington over 1 1/16 miles on Keeneland’s Polytrack surface.

All Squared Away was supplemented to the Marine at a cost of $3,000 and Julio Garcia, who was aboard for the first time in the Lexington, retains the mount.

Friday kicks off the popular twilight concert series in the Churchill paddock, and after Forster runs a filly named Brushed by a Star in the featured 10th of 11 races, he might well be in the mood to kick back and do a little celebrating into the night.

Woodbine: Low-profile trainer Ensom starts off meet by going 6 for 6

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Owner/trainer Jim Ensom had his best year to date in 2011, sending out seven winners and a total of 12 in-the-money finishers from just 16 starters. And while Ensom has changed his modus operandi this year, with permanent stalls at Woodbine for the first time, the results have been nothing less than spectacular.

After watching Kawaguchi win for the second time at the meeting here last Sunday, one day after stable star Sweet Starlet had completed a similar double, Ensom is 6 for 6 here this spring.
