Pimlico: Fiddlers Patriot fires in Jim McKay Turf Sprint

BALTIMORE – Fiddlers Patriot needs to be nursed along because of quarter cracks, according to trainer George Weaver, but when he's good, he's very good. He fired fresh off a layoff on Friday at Pimlico to win the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint for older horses, experiencing the thrill of victory, not the agony of the feet, in the race named for the late host of "ABC's Wide of Sports."

Belmont: Clement more than ready for stakes doubleheader

Shigeki Kikkawa
Achillies won his first two starts at Santa Anita.

Christophe Clement will have a big say in the Tiller and Key Cents, a pair of $90,000 overnight stakes that share top billing on Sunday, but cautions, “It’s New York, it’s Belmont, and it’s never easy.”

Clement has strength in numbers in the Tiller, scheduled for the Widener turf at seven furlongs. He sends out three of the eight 3-year-olds, with Summer Breezing tabbed as a slight favorite over stablemate Achilles, while Faretti will be a price.

“All three are training well,” said Clement

Agave Kiss scores a wire-to-wire, 5 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Miss Preakness Stakes.

BALTIMORE – The undefeated Agave Kiss rolled to her sixth straight win Friday with an overpowering, front-running victory in the $100,000 Miss Preakness Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Agave Kiss ($3.20), the heavy favorite, broke like a shot under jockey Ramon Dominguez, quickly opened a daylight advantage on her rivals, and was never threatened. She finished 5 1/2 lengths clear of runner-up Millionreasonswhy, with Ageless another 3 1/4 lengths back in third in the field of seven.

Gypsy Robin and Singlet were scratched.

Emerald Downs: Jebrica primed for Governor’s Handicap

AUBURN, Wash. – Quick, who ran the fastest race at Emerald Downs in 2011? It wasn’t Noosa Beach, the reigning heavyweight champion, Northwest Division, and it wasn’t Awesome Gem, the horse who KO’ed Noosa Beach in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile.

Jebrica was the fastest horse at Emerald last year, at least for one day. The people who compile Beyer Speed Figures assigned a 98 for his victory in the nine-furlong Emerald Derby, and Jebrica looks to be sitting on more fireworks Sunday as he makes his season debut in the $50,000 Governor’s Handicap.

Pimlico: Small rides Class Rules to win in Lady Legends

BALTIMORE – Of all the new experimental ventures attempted in the game of horse racing, few have been met with the enthusiasm of the Lady Legends for the Cure. Even the losing jockeys exult.

“It’s just great being with these girls, doing everything together, all the hospitality we get,” said Mary Russ Tortora, who Friday was aboard the runner-up, Bellagio, in the third annual Lady Legends for retired female jockeys at Pimlico. “It really is a great event.”
