Woodbine: Gypsy Ring in sharp form for New Providence

Michael Burns
Gypsy Ring, with Justin Stein aboard, wins the Debut Stakes on opening day at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Gypsy Ring, a Sovereign Award finalist for Canadian champion sprinter last year, will clash with rival Paso Doble on Victoria Day holiday Monday in the $125,000 New Providence Stakes.

Gypsy Ring has been among the more consistent sprinters at Woodbine. He would have won more than seven races had he not had hanging tendencies, which is something that jockey Justin Stein has had to deal with.

Northlands: Up Jumps a Monster tries to stay unbeaten on Monday

Pimlico: Zagora flies home to win Gallorette

Tom Keyser
Zagora and Javier Castellano win the Grade 3 Gallorette at Pimlico on Saturday.

BALTIMORE – For a moment there, it looked as if Zagora might be victimized by pace again. But with a calculated ride and smooth trip under Javier Castellano, the standout mare came through as the favorite Saturday in the 61st running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Gallorette Handicap, the first stakes on the Preakness card at Pimlico.

Churchill: Jockey Castanon injured, may have broken hand

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jockey Jesus Castanon, injured when unseated at the start of Friday’s 10th race at Churchill Downs, is believed to have a broken bone in his left hand, agent Dennis Cooper said Saturday.

He is off his mounts this weekend at Churchill Downs, and Cooper said he will not accept any calls for Castanon until after the rider visits a bone specialist Monday. Due to the timing of entries, this means the earliest he could resume riding would be next Saturday. Cooper called that scenario “best case.”

Pimlico: Coup takes Hilltop to cap big day for Velazquez

Tom Keyser
Coup, with John Velazquez riding, draws clear to win the Hilltop by a length.

BALTIMORE - Trainer Graham Motion entered three fillies in the Friday finale at Pimlico, the $100,000 Hilltop Stakes, but scratched two of them. Turns out, he only needed one anyway: Coup, who capped a big day for jockey John Velazquez by drawing clear to win the 1 1/16-mile turf race by a length.

Bred and owned by the Augustin Stable of George Strawbridge Jr., Coup finished in 1:42.71 over a firm course and returned $5 as favorite in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies. An Empire Maker filly, she was coming off a maiden victory at Gulfstream Park.

Pimlico: Sensible Lady rebounds with victory in The Very One

Barbara D. Livingston
Sensible Lady, with Xavier Perez riding, cruises home in The Very One.

BALTIMORE - Off her last race, Sensible Lady didn't make sense to a lot of bettors in the $100,000 The Very One Stakes at Pimlico.

But given her performance two starts back in a second-level allowance race here, the switch to turf made perfect sense to Sensible Lad's trainer, Tim Salzman.

"She ran a huge race here about a month ago," Salzman said. "She ran a very fast time with her neck bowed."

Pimlico: Alternation holds off Nehro to win Pimlico Special

Barbara D. Livingston
Alternation, with jockey Luis Quinonez up, wins the Grade 3 Pimlico Special on Friday.

BALTIMORE – Last month, trainer Donnie Von Hemel came out on the short end of a photo when Caleb’s Posse lost a nose decision to Jackson Bend in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct.

Friday, the roles were reversed for Von Hemel as Alternation got his nose down on the wire just in front of Nehro to win the Grade 3, $300,000 Pimlico Special before an announced crowd of 32,473.

“We got beat a dirty photo in New York last month, so it all evens up,” Von Hemel said.

Pimlico: In Lingerie heads Pletcher-trained 1-2 in Black-Eyed Susan Stakes

Tom Keyser
In Lingerie beats her stablemate Disposablepleasure to the wire in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes on Friday at Pimlico.

BALTIMORE – Late in the stretch run of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the only possible threat to Todd was Todd.

In Lingerie had overcome a troubled start, an uncomfortable opening quarter-mile, and a wide trip to take over from favored Mamma Kimbo after turning for home in the Friday co-feature on the Preakness eve program at Pimlico, and the only looming menace was her Todd Pletcher-trained stablemate, Displosablepleasure. But In Lingerie, with John Velazquez up, continued resolutely to post a 1 1/4-length triumph in the 88th running of the Grade 2, $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan.
