Del Mar: Coil tunes up for Pat O’Brien

Barbara D. Livingston
Coil is set for a start in Sunday's Grade 2, $250,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar.

Coil, who returned from a lengthy layoff to win a money allowance July 26, stayed on edge for the Grade 2, $250,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes on Sunday with an easy half-mile work in 48.80 seconds Tuesday morning under Rafael Bejarano.

Bob Baffert, who trains Coil, said his long-range goal this year is the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Baffert also will run Capital Account in the seven-furlong Pat O’Brien. Capital Account also worked half-mile under Bejarano, in 50.40 seconds.

Bejarano will ride Coil in the race. David Flores rides Capital Account.

Saratoga: Travers now in the cards for Speightscity

Barbara D. Livingston
Speightscity came out of the Withers with an injury.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Talk about being game.

The connections of Speightscity, unraced since Feb. 4, were planning to pay a $20,000 supplemental fee to run their 3-year-old in Saturday’s $1 million Travers Stakes.

The Travers is actually Plan B after Friday’s $100,000 Bernardini Stakes failed to fill.

Del Mar notes: Norvsky a possibility for Pacific Classic

Shigeki Kikkawa
Norvsky is being considered for both Sunday’s Pacific Classic and Del Mar Mile.

DEL MAR, Calif. – A little more than a week ago, Buddy Johnston and trainer Don Warren were hoping to shoot for consecutive wins in the Pacific Classic with Acclamation, last year’s champion older horse. He is sidelined, at least temporarily, but on Tuesday morning, both men were at least contemplating running their second-stringer, Norvsky, in the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic on Sunday.

“We’re thinking about it,” said Johnston, who bred Norvsky and is his co-owner. “But we’ll probably run in the mile.”

Travers: Street Life comes alive with distance, blinkers

Barbara D. Livingston
Street Life works a half-mile in 48.23 seconds Tuesday at Saratoga in preparation for Saturday's Grade 1 Travers.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Waiting to unsaddle Street Life after the colt’s eighth-place finish in his debut at Gulfstream Park, trainer Chad Brown wasn’t expecting to hear rave reviews from jockey Jose Lezcano.

So imagine Brown’s surprise when Lezcano got off the horse after the six-furlong race and told him how high he was on the colt, but that he would benefit from going two turns.

Louisiana Downs: Top Cat Boogie's success easing owner's pain

Top Cat Boogie (left) leads gate to to wire in the Louisiana Cup Derby.

When the 3-year-old Top Cat Boogie won his fourth stakes race of the year in the $75,000 Louisiana Cup Derby at Louisiana Downs last Saturday, the win meant so much more to his connections than the first-place check of $45,000.

“His sire died over the winter, and to get a colt like him doing what he’s doing, it’s kind of erasing a little bit of the pain of losing his stallion,” said Alan Klanfer, who trains Top Cat Boogie for the Circle H Farms operation of Don Hargroder.

Del Mar: Drysdale looking to boost Liberian Freighter’s confidence

Benoit & Associates
Liberian Freighter was entered for a claiming price of $62,500.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Although he has won more than $750,000 and multiple graded stakes, Liberian Freighter has not been performing up to the expectations of his Hall of Fame trainer, Neil Drysdale, in his recent races, so he will dip into softer company in Thursday’s featured seventh race at Del Mar, a $73,000 optional claimer at one mile on turf.

Liberian Freighter is entered for the $62,500 claiming price, but considering that he is now age 7 and a gelding, it’s a calculated risk.

Arlington Park: Sacristy taking big drop in search of a win

Tom Keyser
Sacristy will drop to a second-level allowance after two failed Grade 1 attempts.

Taking a class drop from back-to-back Grade 1 attempts into a second-level allowance would seem the right formula in trying to get a horse back to the winner’s circle. And that’s precisely the path that Sacristy is endeavoring to take for trainer Wayne Catalano.

Still, “it looks like it’s not going to be as easy as I thought,” said Catalano.

Saratoga: Extra distance a plus for Left Unsaid in New York Turf Writers Cup Steeplechase Handicap

Barbara D. Livingston
Left Unsaid trains Tuesday at Saratoga for a start in Thursday's New York Turf Writers Cup Steeplechase Handicap.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y – There’s nothing more frustrating than losing a Grade 1 race by a nose. Except maybe losing a Grade 1 race by a nose with a horse who’d been away from the races nearly 15 months and had just run 2 1/16 miles and jumped nine hurdles only to come up inches short of victory.

Amonte, 76, sues Suffolk for right to ride

Horseman Frank Amonte has sued Suffolk Downs alleging age discrimination after the Boston-area track refused to allow him to ride in races this season.

Amonte, 76, owns and trains horses and won races as a jockey for six decades, most recently in 2005 at the Northampton Fair, which made him the oldest rider to ever win a race at a Thoroughbred track. He’s been unsuccessful since then in a quest to be the only person to win a race in his 70’s, losing 88 races while finishing in the money 12 times.
