Laurel: Whiskey Romeo romps in James F. Lewis III

Whiskey Romeo, with Stewart Elliott in the irons, leads all the way in the James F. Lewis III.

Whiskey Romeo went straight to the lead under jockey Stewart Elliott in Saturday's inaugural running of the $125,000 James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park, and he never relinquished that lead.

Cruising under the finish line in 1:11.70 for the six-furlong distance on the fast main track, Whiskey Romeo was being gently geared down by Elliott as he beat Amerigo Vespucci by 7 1/2 lengths, with Alpha Mike Foxtrot another 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

Aqueduct: Starformer goes to front, stays there in Long Island Handicap

Maneuvered from her rail post to the middle of the snow-softened turf by Edgar Prado, Starformer set up shop in the four path and fended off all challenges to win Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct by a neck over Mystical Star.

Prado, a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee, took Starformer well off the inside soon after the start of the three-turn race, and was clear by a length or so while prompted by an even-wider Hit It Rich, the 2011 Long Island winner.

Woodbine: James Street comes on strong in Autumn Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - James Street ($7.60) rallied furiously in the final furlong to take the Grade 2, $154,200 Autumn Stakes convincingly at Woodbine Saturday.

Patrioticandproud set a slow pace in the 1 1/16-mile Autumn, and looked the part of a winner on the far turn, where James Street was stuck in traffic under Patrick Husbands. After finding room at the eighth pole, James Street kicked in got home on top by a half-length over Patrioticandproud. Hotep finished another half-length back in third, while favored City Wolf faded to sixth in the seven-horse field.

Calvin Borel guided Daisy Devine, a Grade 1 winner carrying topweight of 122 pounds, to a long lead entering the backstretch of the 1 1/8-mile turf  race.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Up With the Birds mounted a powerful four-wide rally from sixth to win the $250,000 Coronation Futurity going away under a hand ride from Eurico Da Silva at Woodbine on Saturday.

Up With the Birds ($4.30) collared the favored Star Contender early in the stretch of the nine-furlong route for 2-year-olds, en route to a  3 1/2-length score in 1:51.13. Star Contender stalked a quick pace before finishing a clear second over His Race to Win, who, like Up With the Birds, is owned by Sam-Son Farm and trained by Malcolm Pierce.

Hollywood Park: Ellis's three Breeders' Cup runners will race again next year

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile runner-up Rail Trip will race next year at age 8.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Ron Ellis had three runners in the Breeders’ Cup, and while none of them won, two finished in the money, and, best news of all for the trainer, it appears all three will remain in training for 2013.

The best-known of Ellis’s trio is Rail Trip, who rallied for second in the Dirt Mile behind Tapizar after finding himself caught in traffic for much of the race.

“It was a tough track to close on,” Ellis said the other morning at Betfair Hollywood Park. “He’s not used to running that way. I was pretty proud of him.”
