Monday at Santa Anita, trainer Doug O’Neill worked three of his top prospects for the Breeders’ Cup – the 2-year-old Know More, the 3-year-old Handsome Mike, and the 7-year-old Richard’s Kid.

Know More, the winner of the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar in August in his debut, is bound for the Juvenile. Second in the Frontrunner Stakes on Sept. 29, Know More worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Monday.

Handsome Mike, who won the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 22, worked six furlongs in 1:13.40. He is a candidate for the BC Dirt Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Unofficially, it’s Turf Marathon Week at Keeneland, where two stakes will be run around three turns on the grass. In coincidental celebration, the 17-day fall meet hits its midpoint Wednesday with an allowance feature with that resonating theme, and officially, it’s a tough race.

MIAMI – Things didn’t start out too well as far as Saturday’s Festival of the Sun program was concerned. First, early morning downpours forced both turf stakes, the Frances Genter and Tropical Park Derby, to be taken off the grass and moved to the main track. Then word was received that Gourmet Dinner, perhaps the most recognizable name on the entire card, was going to be scratched out of the Grade 3 Spend a Buck Handicap.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Next Question, with his game half-length victory in the $501,200 Nearctic Stakes, was the only winner of the three Breeders’ Cup Challenge races at Woodbine on Sunday with designs on exercising that option.

The Grade 1 Nearctic, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and upward, was a Win and You’re In race for the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint over 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on Nov. 3.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Mario Gutierrez guided Glenco Kid to an easy 4 1/2-length win over Step Up in the $75,000 Ascot Graduation at Hastings Sunday. He paid $5.60 as a slight favorite over Proud Victor, who was on the lead when he bolted at the half-mile pole of the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds. Tracker finished third in the Ascot Graduation, the final stakes of the meet, which ended Sunday.

Earlier on the card Richard Hamel brought I Want to Dust Her from last to win the $75,000 Fantasy Stakes.

Trainer Keith Nations told jockey Francisco Duran that the outcome of the $75,250 Bull Dog Handicap on Sunday at the Big Fresno Fair could be determined by his ride.

Duran gave Control Seeker a perfect ride to hold off Juniper Pass by a half-length and win the 1 1/8-mile closing-day feature in 1:51.53. Quindici Man was third another two lengths back. Control Seeker paid $8.60 to win.

“Give all the credit to Francisco,” said Nations. “I talked to him this morning and told him I wasn’t trying to put pressure on him, but it would be a real riders’ race.”

Indication N M overtook dueling leaders Estrickator and Ize in Command for a three-quarter length win in the $55,000 Governor’s Cup for 2-year-olds at Zia Park  on Sunday. Estrickator, the 4-5 favorite, finished in second,  1 1/2 lengths  over Ize in Command.

The race shared a card with the $55,000 Permian Basin won by Winter Book ($6.80). 

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — The world traveler Joshua Tree captured the $1.5 million Canadian International for the second time Sunday at Woodbine, giving jockey Frankie Dettori a record-tying third victory in the Grade 1 turf fixture.

Joshua Tree won the International in 2010, and he finished a troubled second in the race last year. This time, he went right to the front and set soft fractions en route to becoming just the second wire-to-wire winner of the 12-furlong race  since it was switched to the turf in 1958. Over good ground, the final time was 2:30.89.

STICKNEY, Ill. – A barn of horses on the Hawthorne Race Course backstretch was placed in isolation Sunday after two horses with what appeared to be respiratory infections showed symptoms of neurological distress.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Siyouma, patiently handled by regular rider Gerard Mosse, came from just off the pace to score by 1 3/4 lengths in Sunday’s Grade 1, $1 million E.P. Taylor Stakes.

The E.P. Taylor, a 1 1/4-mile turf race for fillies and mares, is a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
