Fort Erie cancels Tuesday’s closing-day card due to weather

Heavy rain throughout the Niagara region, combined with high wind gusts expected as a result of Hurricane Sandy, have prompted Fort Erie racing officials to cancel live racing for Tuesday, which was the final scheduled card of the 2012 meeting.

“Due to the severity of the storm forecasted by the weather networks, and out of respect to the safety of the horses and jockeys, we regretfully make this announcement,” Rick Cowan, the track’s chief operating officer,  said in a press release Monday morning.

Breeders' Cup: Royal Delta opts for Ladies' Classic

Royal Delta will run in Friday's Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Royal Delta, as expected, will be entered Monday in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic, trainer Bill Mott said Monday morning from Belmont Park.

Royal Delta won the Ladies' Classic last year at Churchill Downs. She had been cross-entered in the Classic, but Mott always had said the Ladies' Classic was the target, and neither he nor owner Benjamin Leon changed their mind at the last second.

The Ladies' Classic is Friday, the Classic Saturday, both at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita: Red Sun spoils Ryehill Dreamer's comeback in Lure

Rafael Bejarano completes a sweep of the weekend's stakes at Santa Anita by riding Red Sun to a neck victory over Ryehill Dreamer (2) in the Lure Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Red Sun held off a late threat from even-money favorite Ryehill Dreamer to win Sunday’s $80,760 Lure Stakes on turf at Santa Anita.

Red Sun ($5.80) was ridden by Rafael Bejarano, giving him a sweep of the two stakes at Santa Anita on the weekend before the Breeders’ Cup. Bejarano won Saturday’s Autumn Miss Stakes on Lady Ten.

Red Sun led throughout the Lure Stakes, run over a mile on turf. The 6-yeear-old Red Sun led by a length on the backstretch and was challenged on the turn by Ryehill Dreamer, who had not started in 17 months.

Zia: Joel Marr-trained horses win three stakes on New Mexico Cup card

Horses trained by Joel Marr swept the three richest Thoroughbred races on the $2 million New Mexico Cup card at Zia Park on Sunday, with On Down the Road capturing the $180,000 Rocky Gulch, Iplaytricks upsetting 1-5 favorite Rose’s Desert in the $170,000 Peppers Pride, and Attitude E Racer accounting for the $170,000 Sprint.

The races were part of an 11-stakes card for New Mexico-breds. There were seven stakes for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses and together the races made for one of the richest statebred championship programs in North America.

Santa Anita: Group of 16 Europeans arrive for Breeders' Cup

The 4-year-old filly Sharta, shown in Japan last November, was among the European-based horses to arrive at Santa Anita this weekend for the Breeders' Cup.

Three flights carrying 16 horses based in England, Ireland, and France arrived without incident on Saturday at Santa Anita.

The first group in, traveling on a private charter, included the horses associated with the ruling family of Dubai. Next came a plane with other horses from England and Ireland, and finally the four horses, all fillies, that traveled from France.

Belmont: Mariel N Kathy, Notacatbutallama win closing-day stakes for 2-year-olds

Mariel N Kathy, ridden by Jose Espinoza, wins the Chelsea Flower for 2-year-old fillies by 1 1/2 lengths.

Mariel N Kathy and Notacatbutallama  captured  the$85,000  co-features at one mile on the Widener turf on Sunday’s getaway program exclusively for 2-year-olds at Belmont Park.

Notacatbutallama ($3.30), the runner-up in the recent Pilgrim Stakes, rallied from midpack to collar Bernie the Jet in the stretch and edged away to win the Incurable Optimist by 1 1/4 lengths for Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez. He ran one mile in 1:36.33 over a firm course.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Uncaptured, perfect in four starts on Polytrack in Canada before being upset when a troubled fifth in the Grey Stakes Oct. 7, is apparently just as skilled on dirt as on synthetic tracks.

Cut back to a one-turn mile and racing on dirt for the first time, Uncaptured proved much the best in the Grade 3, $114,800 Iroquois Stakes on Churchill Downs’s opening-day Stars of Tomorrow card for 2-year-olds on Sunday.

Woodbine: Nipissing runs down 27-1 longshot to win Princess Elizabeth

The 2-year-old filly Nipissing rallies under Steve Bahen to remain unbeaten by taking the Princess Elizabeth.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — The favored Nipissing caught 27-1 shot Strut the Course in the final strides to capture the $250,800 Princess Elizabeth Stakes and remain unbeaten Sunday at Woodbine.

Strut the Course raced in ninth early before making a bold, five-wide bid on the far turn in the 1 1/16-mile  route for 2-year-old fillies. She looked the part of a winner on a clear lead in midstretch, but the imposing Nipissing closed under a strong handling from Steve Bahen to prevail by a half-length, in 1:45.25.

Santa Anita: Bourbon Bay drops out of Breeders' Cup Turf

After watching Bourbon Bay work out Saturday, trainer Neil Drysdale announced the multiple stakes winner will not run in the Breeders' Cup Turf, but may be pointed to the Hollywood Turf Cup.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Bourbon Bay, the winner of six turf stakes at Santa Anita in his career, will miss Saturday’s $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf, trainer Neil Drysdale said on Sunday.

“We’re going to skip it,” Drysdale said. “We didn’t think he worked satisfactorily.”

Saturday at Santa Anita, Bourbon Bay worked six furlongs on turf in 1:13.40. Drysdale said that as a substitute for the BC Turf that Bourbon Bay will be considered for the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup at Betfair Hollywood Park on Dec. 15.
