Santa Anita: LaPenta acquires share in Jeranimo; horse will move to Chad Brown’s barn

Benoit & Associates
Jeranimo is likely to make his next start in the San Marcos Stakes on Feb. 9.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Six-time stakes winner Jeranimo was partially sold by owner B.J. Wright to Robert LaPenta earlier this week and will be transferred to trainer Chad Brown in the East this spring.

Where Jeranimo starts in the interim was unclear as of Thursday, Wright said.

The winner of the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes on turf at Santa Anita in his last start Jan. 13, Jeranimo, 7, is being considered for races such as the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on dirt March 2 or the $5 million Dubai Duty Free over about 1 1/8 miles on turf at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai on March 30.

Gulfstream Park: Golden Ticket returns in tough spot in Saturday optional claimer

Barbara D. Livingston
Golden Ticket will make his first start of 2013 in an optional claimer Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Golden Ticket, who dead-heated for first with Alpha in the 2012 Travers, will kick off his 4-year-old season under optional claiming conditions in Saturday’s fourth race. Golden Ticket caught a strong field that also includes 2011 Remsen winner O’Prado Again and trainer Todd Pletcher’s lightly raced but up and coming Yes I’m Awesome.

Sam Houston: Connally Turf Cup represents softer spot for Willcox Inn

Four-Footed Fotos
After chasing Horse of the Year Wise Dan in his last two starts, Willdox Inn gets significant class relief in the Connally Turf Cup.

After consecutive run-ins with eventual Horse of the Year Wise Dan last fall, Willcox Inn will shake the three-time Eclipse Award winner Saturday night in the Grade 3, $200,000 Connally Turf Cup at Sam Houston Race Park. The class move figures to make him a strong favorite in the 1 1/8-mile race for older horses that also drew King David, a Grade 1 winner last year at 3, as well as Florida shippers Swift Warrior, Lockout, and Seal Cove.

Sunland: Melody Lady looks like strong pedigree play in El Paso Times

When it comes to pedigree, Melody Lady has every one of her rivals beat Saturday in the $50,000 El Paso Times at Sunland Park. She’s a daughter of multiple Grade 1 winners Unbridled’s Song and Lady Tak and the family foundation should serve her well when she makes her stakes debut in the 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies.

The El Paso Times drew a field of eight, including Shesatopattraction, winner of the $56,000 Truth or Consequence, an overnight stakes at Zia, and Flamboyance, a winner of two of her last three starts since moving from New Mexico to Southern California.

Santa Anita: Teddy's Promise sharp for Santa Monica

Tom Keyser
Teddy's Promise would prefer an outside post but will start in the middle of the gate in the Santa Monica.

ARCADIA, Calif. – When she races outside horses and in the clear, Teddy’s Promise is among the top female sprinters in California. Other times, not so much.

Teddy’s Promise will enter the gate Saturday at Santa Anita as the deserving favorite in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes, race 8, but her shot to win the seven-furlong race was not enhanced at the draw – post four in a field of nine.

“She does prefer the outside, there’s no question,” trainer Ron Ellis admitted. “I would have preferred to draw outside [front-runner Kindle].”

Santa Anita: Doinghardtimeagain goes for rich purse against statebreds

Benoit & Associates
Alsvid will give owner Jim Rogers a chance to win the King Cotton.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Doinghardtimeagain ran well enough in two wins at Betfair Hollywood Park in the fall to be considered for a stakes against open company in early 2013.

Before starting in such a race, she has a lucrative assignment in the fillies division of the $300,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday, run over one mile.

Santa Anita: Escape Act, Heir Kitty switch to dirt for Santa Ysabel

ARCADIA, Calif. – Escape Act and Heir Kitty will aim for better racing luck Saturday at Santa Anita, where they switch from turf to dirt for the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Six entered the Santa Ysabel, race 4, including impressive maiden winner Branding and Grade 1-placed Scarlet Strike. Branding wheels back in 14 days and stretches to two turns, while Scarlet Strike missed by a nose last out in the $82,000 Blue Norther, a turf race that Escape Act and Heir Kitty would just as soon forget.

Fair Grounds: Delaunay, Gantry continue rivalry in F.W. Gaudin

Delaunay has beaten Gantry by at least two lengths in the two races they met, but the difference between the two sprinters probably is not that great.

In the Temperance Hill Stakes in September at Louisiana Downs, Delaunay stole off to an easy lead while setting a dawdling pace, and Gantry never had a chance to run him down. In the Thanksgiving Handicap on opening day of the ongoing Fair Grounds meet, Gantry was running back 19 days after contesting the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and might not have been at his very best when Delaunay handed him another decisive defeat.

Fair Grounds: Turf racing canceled Thursday, jockeys concerned about course

Fair Grounds cancelled turf racing Thursday after one grass race, an indication that issues with the course might be deeper-rooted than thought.

The turf race Thursday was only the second held at Fair Grounds since Jan. 1. The first part of January was unusually wet, and between heavy storms and intermittent showery days, the course never dried enough to be put back into use. The track went so far last week as to move two turf stakes, the Bradley and the Krantz, from Jan. 19 to Jan. 26 in an attempt to wait out the wet conditions.

Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer Photography
Brushed by a Star (9), beats Joyful Victory in the Chilukki on Nov. 3.

The 1 1/16-mile race also anchors a card of four stakes worth $725,000, including the Grade 3, $200,000 Connally Cup Turf led by Willcox Inn and King David.
