Ellis Park: Track surface ready for meet opener

Ellis Park has had its ups and downs in m ore than 90 years of existence, with closures, bankruptcy, changing ownership, employees’ strikes, horsemen’s boycotts, and even a devastating tornado in fall 2005.

So the latest problem to arise was little more than a proverbial bump in the road for the western Kentucky track. Valid complaints that the main racing surface was full of rocks were made public two weeks out from the 2013 opener on Thursday.

Pleasanton: Distinctiv Passion faces Hollendorfer pair in Casual Lies

Shigeki Kikkawa
The 3-year-old Distinctiv Passion, making his first start since this win in the San Pedro in January, faces older horses in the Casual Lies on Thursday.

Thursday’s first running of the $75,000 Casual Lies Handicap – formerly known as the Sam Whiting Handicap – has come up unusually contentious. For example, Ain’t No Other has won three stakes, placed in graded stakes, and was the runner-up in last year’s Sam Whiting, yet he’s not even the favorite.

Named for the 1992 Kentucky Derby runner-up, the Casual Lies drew a field of six 3-year-olds and up who will run six furlongs on the dirt track at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, Calif.

Woodbine: Black Hornet makes due

Michael Burns
Black Hornet, a $4,500 yearling purchase, has earned $229,280.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Black Hornet, a gelding who had been impressive in winning the seven-furlong Queenston and was supplemented to the Queen’s Plate at a cost of $5,000, had been pointing to the Plate Trial but suffered a brief setback that put an end to that plan.

But Pat Parente, who is the trainer and a part-owner of Black Hornet, picked up a $90,000 consolation prize here last Saturday when the gelding was an impressive winner of the six-furlong Achievement Stakes under his regular rider, Justin Stein.

Woodbine: Original Script gets setup, runs with it

Michael Burns
Original Script earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 86 for her Bison City win.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The June 9 Woodbine Oaks was the first leg of the triple tiara for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies, a series that continued with the 1 1/16-mile Bison City Stakes here last Sunday and will conclude with the $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on the turf here Aug. 4.

But trainer Paul Attard certainly wasn’t looking a gift horse in the mouth after Original Script, who had finished third behind Nipissing and Spring in the Air in the Woodbine Oaks, suddenly became the filly to beat in the Bison City after the Oaks 1-2 opted for the Queen’s Plate.
