Canterbury Park: Halstrom returning as vice president of racing operations

SHAKOPEE, Minn. – Eric Halstrom is returning home. A native of Bloomington, Minn., Halstrom will be taking over the newly created position of vice president of racing operations at Canterbury Park, effective Oct. 21. Halstrom, 44, last week said he would leave his position as vice president and general manager for racing at Fair Grounds on Oct. 1.

“I grew up in Minnesota and experienced my first horse race at Canterbury," Halstrom said. "I am excited to be returning home to work at a track that I deeply care for and that has such a bright future."

Woodbine: Refreshingmemories looks to break through in Wednesday feature

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Refreshingmemories has been knocking on the door in five-furlong maiden special weight races for Ontario-sired females, and will compete under those conditions Wednesday night at Woodbine in the only non-claiming event on the eight-race card.

Refreshingmemories faded to seventh after a stalking trip when she debuted over six furlongs June 14. Two weeks later, when she cut back to five-eighths, she pressed the pace with blinkers on and lugged out on the turn before ending up second.

Presque Isle Downs: Hogy wins Presque Isle Mile

Hogy, under jockey Joe Rocco Jr., came from way off the pace to win the $250,600 Presque Isle Mile by one length Sunday evening at Presque Isle Downs.

Hogy was kept off the early pace and to the outside by Rocco until upper stretch. While fourth in upper stretch, Hogy forged to the lead and drew off, stopping the clock for one mile on the Tapeta synthetic surface in 1:36.72.

Super Chunky was second, a nose in front of Hoofit, who was a head in front of Occasional View in fourth.

Trained by Wayne Catalano, the 4-year-old Hogy returned $7.80 to win.

Emerald Downs: Stryker Phd delivers as favorite in Muckleshoot Tribal Classic

AUBURN, Wash. – After four consecutive runner-up finishes in added-money events, Stryker Phd finally kicked down the door in a stakes race Sunday at Emerald Downs, winning the $47,750 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic going away.

Though he had just one career victory from 10 starts coming into the race, Stryker Phd was made the 4-5 favorite in a field of six statebred older horses and ran to his backing, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.99 and winning by 3 1/4 lengths. Jebrica, the 3-2 second choice, finished a distant third, 8 1/2 lengths behind the winner.

AUBURN, Wash. – E Z Kitty raced to an easy victory Sunday in the $50,000 Pegasus Training Center Stakes at Emerald Downs.

After pressing quick fractions set by Cielator, E Z Kitty took charge near the quarter pole and kicked home to win by 3 3/4 lengths in a field of five Washington-bred fillies and mares. She ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.43 and paid $3.

Barretts at Fairplex: Anillo wires Jim Kostoff Stakes

POMONA, Calif. – The front-running 3-year-old Anillo uncorked an impressive display of speed under red-hot rider Martin Pedroza to win the $50,000 Jim Kostoff Stakes on Sunday at the Los Angeles County Fair.

The 3 1/2-length win by Anillo was the fifth of six victories on the card for Pedroza. The track’s all-time leading rider, Pedroza ended the first week of the Barretts at Fairplex meet with a 12-5 lead in the jockeys’ standings over Alonso Quinonez.

Zia Park: Alsvid by a length in Premiere Cup Handicap

Alsvid came into the $100,000 Premiere Cup Handicap at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M., on Sunday off a 16-length allowance win for which he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 109. He backed up that performance in the Premier, winning the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up in a sizzling 1:07.99.

The race was the first stakes of the Zia Park meet that opened Saturday.

Alsvid ($2.60) rallied from third for a one-length win over Warren’s Knockout. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Safe Trip in third.

Hastings: Tempered Steel wins British Columbia Oaks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Tempered Steel ($9.60) came from well back to score a mild upset in the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks at Hastings on Sunday. The 1 1/8-mile Oaks was one of five stakes supporting the Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby.

Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Tempered Steel sat comfortably in midpack while Miss Derek posted a very fast half-mile time of 46.26 seconds. She started to move into contention on the stretch turn and was in full flight when she made a strong move along the rail to get within 1 1/2 lengths of Miss Derek at the top of the stretch.
