Upstart has had enough of American Pharoah

Debra A. Roma
Upstart is being considered for the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 19.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Rick Violette said Monday that if American Pharoah runs in the Grade 1 Travers, he’ll run Upstart somewhere else.

Upstart, in his first start since the Kentucky Derby, finished third, 5 1/4 lengths behind American Pharoah, in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 2.

“We tried him once; it didn’t work out,” Violette said Monday. “We’re running out of restricted races. You’d like to be able to have a shot in one. I know you’re not supposed to duck one horse, but he’s not just an ordinary horse.”

Divisidero to sit out until wintertime

Debra A. Roma
Divisidero goes into the Pennine Ridge off this victory in the American Turf at Churchill Downs.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The exciting Divisidero, whose powerful late run has made him one of the top 3-year-old turf horses in North America, won’t be entered Wednesday in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes and won’t see racing action again until this winter at the earliest, according to trainer Buff Bradley.

Divisidero was among the horses pre-entered Saturday in the Secretariat but has not posted a timed workout since July 15, and instead of racing this weekend, he will head to Silver Springs Farm near Paris, Ky., where owner Tom Keithley’s Gunpowder Farms boards its stock.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Fantastic Style, the winner of the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 11, has been sidelined with a pulled muscle, trainer Bob Baffert said.

The injury was detected after the 3-year-old filly worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds July 23 and kept Fantastic Style from a start in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

“She’s just jogging,” Baffert said. “She got muscle sore after her workout. I was going to run her in the Test but couldn’t do it.”

Young Brian looks like half-million in debut

DEL MAR, Calif. – Last February, owner and breeder John Liviakis bought back a Hard Spun colt for $500,000 at the Barretts select sale of 2-year-olds in training. On Saturday at Del Mar, it was apparent why he sought to retain the colt, named Young Brian.

In his debut, Young Brian overcame an awkward start to win a maiden special weight race at 6 1/2 furlongs by 10 1/4 lengths. The win put Young Brian at the fore of the list of contenders for the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 7.

Honor Code wins the Whitney Stakes over Liam's Map on Saturday at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31 is the intended target for the top three finishers from Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga. How that trio gets to that $5 million race still is to be determined.
