SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer John Terranova has been enjoying a magnificent summer and he thinks he has American Pharoah to thank.

American Pharoah, trained by Bob Baffert, was housed in Terranova’s Belmont barn leading up to his historic run in the Belmont Stakes, which clinched Thoroughbred racing’s first Triple Crown in 37 years. Over the last two months, Terranova has done quite well, winning eight races since June, including five from just 13 starters during the first part of the Saratoga meet.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The likelihood that Beholder will take on males in the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 22 increased Tuesday when she “could not have looked better,” according to trainer Richard Mandella, during a half-mile work in 48.60 seconds at Del Mar.

“Super. Everything’s good,” said Mandella, who also will send out Catch a Flight in the Pacific Classic.

Mandella said Beholder would have one more work early next week and then would be set for the meet’s richest and most-prestigious race.

Amazing Anne might make quick turnaround

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Tom Morley said Tuesday morning that he’s still strongly considering bringing his 3-year-old filly Amazing Anne back in Thursday’s $100,000 Statue of Liberty Division of the New York Stallion Series Stakes following her second-place finish against males in the open Cab Calloway Division on Monday.

“The filly ate up last night, and at the moment everything is pointing towards running, although obviously we’ve got another day and one-half to make a decision,” Morley said Tuesday.

Kandoo brings Florida form to Adirondack

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – After the Gulfstream Park invader Off the Tracks ran away to a 3 1/4-length victory on opening day in the Schuylerville Stakes, it was only logical that others from south Florida might try to follow in her footsteps. So while Off the Tracks cools her heels until the Grade 1 Spinaway on Sept. 5, another filly who won her maiden impressively at Gulfstream Park this summer, Kandoo, will try to win Saturday’s Grade 2 Adirondack, the second of three graded stakes at the meet for 2-year-old fillies.

Tyro win one for the books

Expected Ruler wins the Tyro Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths Sunday at Monmouth.

Expected Ruler’s win in the $60,000 Tyro at Monmouth Park on Sunday was the first stakes victory for 20-year-old trainer Liam Benson. It was also the first stakes win as an owner for Benson’s father, Liam F. Benson, and for jockey Wilmer Garcia and his agent, Joe Orseno Jr.

If that isn’t enough, the Tyro was Expected Ruler’s first career start.

Benson had hoped to run Expected Ruler in a maiden race, but when it failed to fill he had to come up with a new plan. He opted for the Tyro, a five-furlong turf race for 2-year-olds.

Pearson building his own equine empire

DEL MAR, Calif. – This is the type of summer Deron Pearson has dreamed of for nearly 35 years.

As a teenager in the early 1980s, Pearson was an avid racing fan, attending Del Mar with his family. By the mid-1990s, his telephone communications business was successful enough for him to buy a share in a racehorse. Through the years, his involvement in ownership grew, and when he sold his business, which had evolved into information technology and software, Pearson’s investment in racing soared.
