LEXINGTON, Ky. - Long before the NFL kicked off its schedule of games later that afternoon, a trio of Breeders’ Cup trainers called audibles of their own on a frigid Sunday morning at Keeneland.
Breeders' Cup Sprint favorite Private Zone was scheduled to work from the gate Sunday morning at host track Keeneland, but trainer Jorge Navarro called a late audible, instead working the gelding in a brisk 59 seconds from the pole on the watch of Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch.
Ron Winchell's homebred operation enjoyed a stellar 2014 Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita as Kentucky Oaks heroine Untapable won the BC Distaff to secure a divisional championship and multiple graded stakes winner Tapiture finished second in the BC Dirt Mile to repeat winner Goldencents.
ARCADIA, Calif. – With a little help from the stewards, jockey Mario Gutierrez was perfect with five mounts Friday at Santa Anita, the second time in his career he has recorded five victories on a program.
Gutierrez, best known for winning the 2012 Kentucky Derby on I’ll Have Another, had five wins at Hastings Park in British Columbia in May 2008.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Joe Talamo will ride the longshot Hard Aces in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31, trainer John Sadler said Saturday.
Sadler was in need of a rider for Hard Aces, a Grade 1 winner in June, after jockey Victor Espinoza committed to riding Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Talamo was a leading choice for Sadler because of their recent success together. Earlier this month, Talamo rode the Sadler-trained Ben’s Duchess to a win in the LA Woman Stakes, a prep for the BC Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland.
ELMONT, N.Y. – After watching two of his four potential Breeders’ Cup horses put in workouts Saturday morning at Belmont Park, trainer Christophe Clement had reason to be both happy and frustrated.
Clement was very happy with the moves Tonalist (Breeders’ Cup Classic) and Red Vine (Dirt Mile) put in over the Belmont main track. He was frustrated that for the 10th consecutive year, he and his fellow New York trainers have to ship to run in the Breeders’ Cup. This year’s event will be held at Keeneland for the first time.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile contender Bradester heated up stopwatches on a cold Saturday morning at Keeneland, turning in a sharp five-furlong move that had trainer Eddie Kenneally pleased with how his charge handled the track.
Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch caught Bradester and jockey Corey Lanerie in 59.01 seconds as they finished several lengths ahead of workmate Ready Get Set. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.23.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – There was a chill in the air when the track opened for training at Keeneland early Friday morning, with colder weather yet to come this weekend at the host site for the 2015 Breeders’ Cup.
Nine potential Breeders’ Cup starters breezed over a fast track on Friday, and Limousine Liberal and Sticksstatelydude were all but confirmed for the Sprint and Juvenile, respectively, by the time they had finished cooling out after their works.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – With the 32nd Breeders’ Cup straight ahead, Keeneland racing officials say they are using a conservative approach in trying to preserve a turf course that is showing some wear from regular use.
Starting this weekend, the temporary rails were being placed well out onto the course to preserve the inner paths that have taken some beating since the fall meet began Oct. 2. As of Friday, fields were being limited to 10 starters because of how the course is constricted by those rail placements of 15 feet (or more) out from the inside hedge.
