Merry Meadow puts in final work for Breeders’ Cup

ELMONT, N.Y. – Merry Meadow earned a fees-paid berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint by virtue of her victory in the Grade 2 Princess Rooney Stakes at Gulfstream Park in July. On Monday at Belmont Park, Merry Meadow had her final workout for the Breeders’ Cup, breezing four furlongs in 47.10 seconds over the main track.

Merry Meadow worked following the renovation break. Under Gustavo Delgado, she went in even splits of 23.50 seconds and 23.60 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:00.77. Last week, Merry Meadow worked five furlongs in 1:01.66.

Wicked Strong works for Dirt Mile

ELMONT, N.Y. – While Honor Code used the one-mile Kelso Handicap as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at 1 1/4 miles, Wicked Strong apparently used the 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

On Monday, Wicked Strong breezed four furlongs in 47.67 seconds over the Belmont Park training track in preparation for the Dirt Mile. With exercise rider Kelvin Pahal up, Wicked Strong went his first quarter in 23.77 seconds and his second quarter in 23.90. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.31.

Honor Code starts late, finishes early

I'm Already Sexy gives owners one last thrill

I'm Already Sexy won her final race for Hit the Board Stables and now will be offered at the Fasig-Tipton November sale on Nov. 1.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – All racing partnerships should work out this way. A wire-to-wire victory Saturday at Keeneland by I’m Already Sexy produced a scene in the winner’s circle that could be described just one way.

“Very bittersweet,” said Anna Seitz, who assembled and managed the Hit the Board Stables partnership that owns the 5-year-old mare.

I’m Already Sexy was making her final start for a sizable group that enjoyed an exhilarating run of 26 races. She will be sold at auction Nov. 1 at nearby Fasig-Tipton, where Seitz works in public relations and client development.

Gamble's Ghost to stay local and target Princess Elizabeth

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes winner Gamble’s Ghost will not run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland and instead will point toward the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine, trainer Josie Carroll said. The Princess Elizabeth Stakes is restricted to Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies and will be run over 1 1/16 miles on Polytrack on Nov. 1.

Woodbine owner-breeder Sapara dies

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Prominent Canadian owner and breeder Jim Sapara died last Thursday, trainer Josie Carroll said. The trainer didn’t know his age or cause of death.

“I’ve trained for him for 18 years,” she said. “He’s got a pretty big history in the game.”

A successful businessman in western Canada, Sapara and his wife, Alice, initially started Winsong Farms as a hobby in 1975. Carroll and the Saparas teamed up to win their first Queen’s Plate with Edenwold in 2006.

Academic will face older rivals next in Maple Leaf

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – After Grade 3 wins against males in the Canadian Derby and British Columbia Derby, Academic will tackle older fillies and mares in the Grade 3, $150,000 Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine on Oct. 31, trainer Reade Baker said.

The Maple Leaf covers 1 1/4 miles on Polytrack. Justin Stein, who has ridden Academic in each of her three stakes wins this year, retains the mount, Baker said.

Harmonize among Breeders' Cup workers for Mott

Harmonize works a half-mile Monday ahead of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Trainer Bill Mott, who said he'll have a trio of Breeders’ Cup pre-entries, sent a pair of those runners out to work Monday at host track Keeneland.

Mott worked the 2-year-old filly Harmonize in company with Grade 1 winner Seek Again shortly after the morning maintenance break. Harmonize, who earned an automatic berth in the Juvenile Fillies Turf with her win in the Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland, finished her four furlongs in 48.89 seconds, according to Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch. Seek Again stopped the timer in 49.19.
