Berrios picks up Pacific Classic mount on Express Train

DEL MAR, Calif. – Hector Berrios will replace Mike Smith on Express Train in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 1 1/4 miles on Aug. 31 at Del Mar, trainer John Shirreffs said Sunday.

Berrios, who through Sunday was fourth in the jockey standings with 15 wins, will ride Express Train in a race for the first time. Berrios, 37, has been aboard Express Train for his last two workouts, Shirreffs said, the most recent of which was six furlongs in 1:13 last Friday at Del Mar.

Berrios has had 19 mounts for Shirreffs in his career through Sunday, winning three times.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Based on a recent partial sale, the unbeaten 3-year-old filly Iscreamuscream was worth $990,000 on Saturday morning. By Saturday evening, the figure had soared considerably.

Already a stakes winner at Del Mar in July, Iscreamuscream extended her streak to four races with a comprehensive win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Saturday.

Illuminare to miss Smarty Jones

Trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed that Illuminare will miss the Smarty Jones at Parx.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Illuminare, the 3-year-old son of City of Light who won his first two starts, missed some training time due to a foot injury and was not entered Monday for Saturday’s $200,000 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx Racing, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Illuminare won a first-level allowance here July 13 by 4 3/4 lengths. He did not work again until Saturday, when he went a half-mile in 50 seconds.

Brown sending Chili Flag, Whitebeam to First Lady

Whitebeam will be part of an expected duo for trainer Chad Brown in the First Lady at Keeneland.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – As trainer Chad Brown runs four of his stakes-caliber older turf fillies and mares in Thursday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Ballston Spa Stakes, he is pointing two Grade 1 winners of 2024 to the Grade 1 First Lady on Oct. 5 at Keeneland.

Chili Flag, who has three stakes win this year including the Grade 1 Just a Game, has been off the work tab since Aug. 2 owing to a temperature, Brown said.

Whitebeam, who won the Grade 1 Diana for the second consecutive year in July, has worked three times since that victory.

Gulfport awaiting Hopeful decision; plotting return to stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – As the connections of Gulfport await a final resolution in the courts regarding the 2022 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga that could eventually make him a Grade 1 winner, they are running him in allowance spots for which he officially remains eligible while hoping to return to stakes company.

Following a victory in a second-level allowance at Churchill Downs on June 30, Gulfport now steps into a third-level allowance/ $80,000 optional claimer that goes as Thursday’s eighth race at Saratoga.

Appleby preps Measured Time, Silver Knott for Sword Dancer

Measured Time will join his Charlie Appleby-trained and Godolphin-owned stablemate Silver Knott for next week's Sword Dancer.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The powerful Godolphin-Charlie Appleby team is likely to send out both Measured Time and Silver Knott, recent stakes winners at Saratoga, in the Grade 1, $750,000 Sword Dancer Stakes on Aug. 24.

On Friday, the pair each put in a workout over the Oklahoma turf course. Measured Time, winner of the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes on June 8, went a half-mile in 50.29 seconds, according to Daily Racing Form, outfinishing workmate Bold Act while getting his final quarter in 24.07 seconds.

Brown works Unmatched Wisdom a day early for Travers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With only three starts under his belt, Unmatched Wisdom will be the least experienced runner of the eight 3-year-olds expected to be entered Sunday in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes to be run here on Aug. 24.

But with a perfect 3-for-3 record and the services of leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time, he could be one of the more intriguing runners in the field.

Unique Power draws the rail, gets tough test in debut

Unique Power drew the rail for his debut Saturday at Del Mar.

Unique Power, the impeccably-bred 2-year-old colt, worked a fast half-mile in 46.40 seconds at Del Mar on Aug. 11 in advance of his debut in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs on Saturday.

Unique Power will start from the inside post in a field of six and will need to show speed to secure an early position. Unique Bella seems to have that ability, trainer John Sadler said on Friday.

“It’s kind of a tough post,” Sadler said. “He’ll have to break really well.

Jockey Alsagoor to miss at least three weeks

Jockey Abdul Alsagoor said on Friday that he hopes to resume riding at Del Mar in early September after sustaining a shoulder injury when he was unseated shortly after the start of a race last Sunday.

Alsagoor sustained the injury when the 3-year-old colt Brunchandcrunch veered toward the inside and struck a temporary rail shortly after the start of a maiden race at six furlongs.

“He ducked away” from me, Alsagoor said. “He did it really quick.”
