A sharp win by Johannes in his 2024 debut in Thursday’s Grade 3 American Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita will lead to the 4-year-old colt’s Grade 1 debut in the $300,000 Shoemaker Mile on May 27.
Johannes chased a fast pace in the $102,500 American Stakes, closing from third in a field of 10 to win his first start in 11 months. Johannes was timed in a quick 1:32.08.
On Friday morning, trainer Tim Yakteen said the colt emerged from the race in ideal condition.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Linda Rice won the Aqueduct winter meet trainer’s title by one after David Jacobson won five races on last Saturday’s final card of the season.
On Thursday, the first day of Aqueduct’s spring meet, Rice won five races herself, teaming with Jose Lezcano in all of them on an eight-race card.
It is believed to be the first time a trainer and jockey teamed up to win five races on one New York Racing Association card since Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez did it Aug. 30, 2004 at Saratoga.
The second race at Santa Anita on Thursday was abandoned and declared a no contest after jockey Geovanni Franco was unseated at the start of a one-mile race on the main track, on a section of the track the remaining runners would have traversed in the final yards before the finish.
Flatterwithjewels stumbled and unseated Franco shortly after the start.
The runners were near the end of the backstretch when riders were instructed to pull up their mounts. Track stewards made the decision to abandon the race out of concern over Franco’s condition.
Corposo earned a start in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks on Saturday with a narrow win in a maiden race at a mile on March 8 in her two-turn debut.
The $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks at 1 1/16 miles will tell owner and breeder Nick Cosato and trainer Peter Eurton where Corposo ranks in California’s 3-year-old filly division, and whether she is good enough to be considered for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 3.
“We know she can get the two turns,” Eurton said on Wednesday. “Now, we’re taking it to another level. We’ll find out a lot.”

Stefano Cherchi, an Italian-born jockey, died earlier this week as a result of injuries sustained in a spill in a race in Australia in March. Cherchi worked briefly as an exercise rider at Santa Anita in the winter of 2022-2023.
Cherchi was 23. He won more than 100 races in Britain, where his career began in 2018.
Cherchi began riding in Australia earlier this year and rode winners in February and March before he was involved in the accident at Canberra Racecourse on March 20. Cherchi sustained a head injury and internal bleeding, according to reports.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – First Mission has stakes options at Oaklawn and Churchill Downs after winning the Grade 3 Essex here last month with a Beyer Speed Figure of 100. He rolled by five lengths in the 1 1/8-mile race to rebound from an uncharacteristic ninth-place finish in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational in January at Gulfstream Park.
“He got our confidence back,” said Brad Cox, who trains the homebred for Godolphin. “We always thought he was a good horse – obviously, he was a graded stakes winner already – but it definitely got our confidence back.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – West Omaha will most likely make her next start in the Grade 2, $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan on May 17 at Pimlico Race Course, trainer Brad Cox said Tuesday.
West Omaha is coming off a runner-up finish in the Grade 2, $750,000 Fantasy at Oaklawn and ranks fourth in Kentucky Oaks points with 90. She was to have shipped Tuesday to Churchill Downs for owners Gary and Mary West.
“After talking it over with Mr. West, it looks like we’ll probably pursue the Black-Eyed Susan,” Cox said. “We’ll just see how everything plays out.”
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Wet Paint, who swept the 3-year-old filly series last year at Oaklawn Park, could launch her 4-year-old season here in the Grade 1, $1.25 Apple Blossom Handicap, trainer Brad Cox said Tuesday.
Wet Paint won the Martha Washington, Honeybee, and Fantasy at Oaklawn for breeder Godolphin, before going on to run a good fourth in the Kentucky Oaks. She later won the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga. Wet Paint last raced Nov. 4 and was eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
The Apple Blossom, which will be run over 1 1/16 miles, is April 13.
