Brass Hat to parade as part of Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Day

Brass Hat, a winner of more than $2.17 million during a 40-race career that ended in 2010, will be paraded Sunday at Ellis Park.

Brass Hat, one of the most popular horses on the Kentucky circuit in the last decade, will be paraded before what is expected to be a sizable crowd Sunday at Ellis Park.

It’s Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Day at the western Kentucky track, with a number of activities and tributes honoring retired racehorses on the docket. Brass Hat is the literal poster boy: Free posters will be given to those in attendance, with owner and trainer Buff Bradley and Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel available for autographs.

McCraken continues Haskell prep at Churchill

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – McCraken was sent through another swift workout Thursday as the standout 3-year-old colt continues to prepare in the relative quiet of Churchill Downs for the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational.

Trainer Ian Wilkes said he is elated with how McCraken came out of his 2 1/4-length victory in the June 17 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill, where the colt will train until leaving a few days before the July 30 Haskell at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

Injury sidelines Sutherland until Del Mar

CYPRESS, Calif. – Chantal Sutherland will not ride until Wednesday’s opening day of the Del Mar summer meeting after bruising her leg in a frightening paddock accident at Los Alamitos on Thursday.

Sutherland was injured when her mount for the seventh race, Be a Lady, reared and knocked the rider down. Be a Lady stepped on Sutherland’s leg before the 4-year-old filly was brought under control.

Sutherland was taken from the paddock on a stretcher. She underwent X-rays at nearby Los Alamitos Medical Center, which were negative, according to her agent, Tommy Ball.

Hence, Girvin bring expected Haskell field to nine

Iowa Derby winner Hence is expected to make his next start in the Haskell Invitational.

The lineup for the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational picked up both Hence and Girvin in recent days, according to Monmouth Park officials.

The prospective field for the 1 1/8-mile Haskell now stands at nine despite dropping Always Dreaming from the list of probables. The Kentucky Derby winner is expected to compete in the July 29 Jim Dandy at Saratoga the day before the Haskell.

Baffert hoping to strike right away at Saratoga meet

If Abel Tasman works to trainer Bob Baffert's satisfaction Saturday at Santa Anita, she will ship to Saratoga for the Grade 1 CCA Oaks.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Last year, trainer Bob Baffert didn’t make his presence felt at Saratoga until late in the meet, when he sent Arrogate and Drefong across the country to win the Travers and King’s Bishop.

Baffert could make a much earlier entrance at Saratoga this summer.

Provided a scheduled workout at Santa Anita on Saturday goes well, Baffert plans to run Abel Tasman in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies on July 23.

I Still Miss You tough in Lynbrook Stakes

I Still Miss You paid $10.80 in winning the Astoria Stakes at Belmont on Thursday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – I Still Miss You, the undefeated winner of the Astoria Stakes on June 8, will drop back in with New York-breds when she heads a field of five entered to run in Sunday’s $125,000 Lynbrook Stakes, the closing-day feature at Belmont Park.

The Lynbrook will go as race 4 on an 11-race card that begins at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.

Hawksmoor shifts sights from Diana to Beverly D.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Hawksmoor, the winner of the Grade 3 Beaugay and Grade 2 New York stakes, will miss the Grade 1 Diana next weekend at Saratoga after missing a week of training due to illness, trainer Arnaud Delacour said Thursday.

“She got sick last week, her blood work was not very good, so we gave her an easy week,” said Delacour, who last breezed Hawksmoor on July 1 at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. “We’ll probably aim for the Beverly D.”
