Catholic Boy skips work due to temperature

Ronnie Betor
Travers winner Catholic Boy is pointing for the Nov. 3 Breeders' Cup Classic.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Travers winner Catholic Boy skipped a workout this weekend, owing to a temperature that trainer Jonathan Thomas said shouldn’t prevent the 3-year-old from making the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.

“It’s very minor in the grand scheme of things,” Thomas said Monday. “He had a mild temperature, which has since rectified. We just didn’t want to take any chances. I’m anticipating being able to breeze him this weekend. I’m glad it’s a month out and not a week out.”

Sano likes Gunnevera's chances in BC Classic

Barbara D. Livingston
Gunnevera has started just four times during his 4-year-old campaign this year.

MIAMI – It’s easy to understand why trainer Antonio Sano’s confidence level entering the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Gunnevera is a lot higher than it was when he sent his star out to Del Mar to finish in a dead heat for fifth in the big event one year ago.

“He’s a year older, more experienced, and there are no Gun Runners or Arrogates in the field this year,” Sano said from Gulfstream Park West on Monday.

Insta Erma (right) stumbled badly out of the gate in Saturday's Grade 1 First Lady at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The first couple of steps for Insta Erma in the First Lady on Saturday produced perhaps the most vivid images of opening weekend at Keeneland. Somehow, some way, Tyler Gaffalione stayed aboard the 5-year-old mare when she stumbled badly out of post 1.

No other horses were affected, and although she was never a serious factor at 23-1, Insta Erma persisted to finish a decent sixth of nine, beaten just 3 1/4 lengths. She came out of the race no worse for wear, according to Aimee Dollase, assistant to trainer Richard Baltas.
