Sippican Harbor will train up to BC Juvenile Fillies

Debra A. Roma
Sippican Harbor wins the Spinaway Stakes by two lengths at Saratoga on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Sippican Harbor came out of her upset victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes “perfect” according to trainer Gary Contessa, but the filly won’t start again before the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs.

“Just train into the Breeders’ Cup,” Contessa said. “She ran twice in 20 days, that’s enough. I can’t see the perfect timing for another race, we’ll go in with a fresh horse.”

Army Mule goes three furlongs in first breeze since Carter

Barbara D. Livingston
Army Mule got a 114 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in the Carter Handicap in April.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Army Mule, the fast but fragile colt, worked three furlongs in 39.88 seconds over Saratoga’s main track on Saturday in his first breeze since he won the Grade 1 Carter at Aqueduct on April 7.

“First breeze, easy three-eighths by himself, get him back under way,” trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Pletcher said he would love to get Army Mule to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3, “but that’s a long way away, we have to figure out how we’re going to get there.”

Hotshot Anna on track for Presque Isle Masters

Coady Photography
Hotshot Anna is to make her next start in the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes on Sept. 17.

Hotshot Anna is a competent sprinter on turf and even better on dirt, but what she does far better than anything else is race over synthetic surfaces.

After easily winning the Chicago Handicap on June 23 over Arlington’s Polytrack surface, Hotshot Anna returned from a freshening to dominate the $100,000 Satin N Lace Stakes on Aug. 20 over Tapeta at Presque Isle Downs. That makes the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes on Sept. 17 an obvious spot for Hotshot Anna, and owner-trainer Hugh Robertson plans on doing the obvious.

Becker focused on future after milestone achievement

Coady Photography
Trainer Scott Becker recently notched his 1,000th career victory.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – It took trainer Scott Becker just 10 years to amass 1,000 wins, but the irony is that the milestone, hit last week at Fairmount Park, comes during Becker’s slowest season since 2010.

Daughter of Havre de Grace makes debut

Barbara D. Livingston
Graceful Princess, the third foal out of Havre de Grace, trains at Saratoga on Aug. 13.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – On the final Sunday of the 2017 Saratoga meet, trainer Ralph Nicks sent out a debuting 2-year-old filly to win a seven-furlong maiden race at Saratoga at odds of 10-1.

That filly, Caledonia Road, would two months later win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and be crowned champion 2-year-old filly.

On Sunday, Nicks will send out another debuting 2-year-old filly in a seven-furlong maiden race at Saratoga. It is highly unlikely Graceful Princess will go off at similar odds as Caledonia Road.
