Size banking on light weight and Kingscote magic to overcome Red Lion's tricky draw

The Hong Kong Jockey Club
Red Lion is one of three runners for John Size in the HK$5.35 million G2 Sha Tin Trophy (1600m).

By Paul Ryding

John Size says the generous handicap that Red Lion will receive and the services of “perfect” partner Richard Kingscote might be enough to overcome a tricky draw in the HK$5.35 million G2 Sha Tin Trophy (1600m).

In a race expected to be run at a strong clip, drawing gate 13 might have scuppered the chances of his Group 1-winning galloper in Sunday’s (19 October) feature. But the consistent six-year-old will bear just 119lb – the lightest impost he’s carried in almost 22 months – and Size says he’s seen some improvement over the off-season.

Hoping Delacroix can be Champion

Randwick | Race 7: The Everest

Like a lot of people, I want to see KA YING RISING win this, but it won’t be easy and he’s probably going to be the biggest price he’s been for a long time.

Ascot: Calandagan looks to spoil party in Champion Stakes

Liesl King
Calandagan takes on Delacroix and Ombudsman in Saturday's Champions Stakes at Ascot.

Delacroix and Ombudsman were a neck apart when first and second in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park in England in July, and separated by 3 1/2 lengths when the order of finished was reversed in the Group 1 Juddmonte International at York in August.

Consider Saturday’s Group 1 Champion Stakes at Ascot to be the 2025 series decider between the accomplished pair with one important caveat – the French shipper Calandagan is on a two-race winning streak, adores Ascot, and has outstanding credentials of his own.

Ka Ying Rising should silence the haters in Everest Stakes

Hong Kong Jockey Club
Heavy Everest favorite Ka Ying Rising, Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year in 2024-25, has won 13 consecutive starts, including a win at 1-20 odds on Sept. 7, his only start since April.

Not even dubious social media rumors can hamper Ka Ying Rising’s status as the odds-on favorite in Friday’s Group 1 Everest Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia.

The 2024-25 Horse of the Year in Hong Kong, Ka Ying Rising will start away from Hong Kong for the first time in the $13.09 million Everest Stakes at six furlongs, the world’s richest sprint.
