$60K mare leads early in Barretts sale

A 6-year-old mare by Forest Camp took the early lead Monday when she sold for $60,000 at the Barretts winter mixed auction in Pomona, Calif.

Paula Capestro signed the ticket for Forest Melody early in the opening session. Special T Thoroughbreds, agent, consigned the stakes-placed mare. Capestro trained the mare and also co-owned her with R. Man Racing Stables.

Forest Melody last raced in March 2009, when she finished sixth in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Handicap. She was not cataloged in foal to the Barretts sale.

Fasig-Tipton mixed sale has 337

Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's winter mixed sale, set for Feb. 8 at the company's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky., will offer 337 horses. One hundred and fifteen of those are yearlings. Catalogs are available online at and through Fasig-Tipton offices. The Feb. 8 auction will start at 10 a.m.

Craig dispersal to fatten Barretts average

ARCADIA, Calif. - The stable that Jenny Craig and her late husband, Sid, built over the last 25 years is being downsized. While some of their lesser horses have been claimed recently in Southern California, the first stage of the downsizing will occur through a reduction of their holdings on Monday and Tuesday at the Barretts January mixed sale in Pomona, Calif.

The Craig consignment, conducted through Grant Hofmans, agent, comprises 43 horses - 12 broodmares, 12 horses of racing age, 11 2-year-olds and 8 yearlings.

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company has cataloged 160 horses to its select juvenile sale, set for Feb. 16 at the company's pavilion in Ocala, Fla.

Australian breeding figure down

The Australian breeding industry saw a 12-percent decline in number of mares bred in 2009, according to figures released Jan. 21 by the Keeper of the Australian Stud Book, Michael Ford. But Australia's busiest sire, Coolmore stallion Fastnet Rock, covered 272 mares for a new Australian record.

The previous record, set in 2007, was 265 mares for Eliza Park stallion Bel Esprit.

Breeding reports filed by Jan. 20, 2010, show that 710 stallions covered 23,320 mares in 2009.

Catalogs are available for the Tattersalls February mixed sale online at and in hard-copy form. The 2010 auction - to take place on Feb. 4 in Newmarket, England - has 289 horses cataloged, including breeding stock, horses in training, juveniles, and yearlings.

Ocala sale ends down overall

The Ocala Breeders' Sale Company ended its winter mixed sale with overall declines after its second and last session Wednesday, but gains in average and median on Tuesday's opening day helped prevent steeper declines.

Tuesday's opening consignor-preferred session posted a 13-percent increase in average price and a 24-percent rise in median. Wednesday's open session reversed those gains, as the average fell 3 percent and median dropped by 9 percent, but the open session gross did increase by 8 percent.

Einstein to stand for $7,500

Einstein, a five-time Grade 1 winner, will enter stud with a $7,500 fee, Adena Springs announced Wednesday.

An 8-year-old Spend a Buck horse, Einstein was to arrive at Adena Springs in Paris, Ky., at noon Thursday.

Trained by Helen Pitts, Einstein earned Grade 1 triumphs in the 2009 Santa Anita Handicap on Pro-Ride, the 2008 Gulfstream Park Turf Stakes, the 2006 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Stakes on turf, and back-to-back editions of Churchill's Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes in 2008 and 2009.

Toccet relocating to Pennsylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Dual Grade 1 winner Toccet will relocate from Kentucky to Pennsylvania, where he will stand at Dana Point Farm in 2010, the farm confirmed Tuesday.

The 10-year-old Awesome Again horse is the sire of Canadian Grade 3 victor Winning Machine; the graded-placed Dubinsky, La Rocca, and Gretsky; and stakes winners Awesome Rhythm and Toccet's Charm.

He will stand for $3,500, with special consideration given to Pennsylvania breeders, Dana Point manager Maria Vorhauer said.
