The 16-year-old Breeders' Cup Turf winner will return to stud in Ireland at Coolagown Stud in Co. Cork after four seasons at South Africa's Riethuiskrael Stud. Daylami began his stud career in Ireland his birthplace, the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud. . . .

Square Eddie retired to stud after injury

ARCADIA, Calif. - Square Eddie, the winner of the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity in 2008 in his American debut, has been retired to stud with a suspensory injury, owner Paul Reddam said on Friday.

The injury was detected on Thursday, two days before Square Eddie was scheduled to start in the $200,000 Strub Stakes at Santa Anita.

Reddam said that he will breed mares to Square Eddie at Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, Calif., this year and that the 4-year-old colt will stand for a private fee to other breeders.

Sefapiano, sire of Jonesboro, dies

Louisiana stallion Sefapiano, sire of multiple graded winner and millionaire Jonesboro, has died of a heart attack at age 21, according to Racing Post. The Fappiano-Sefa's Beauty horse died Jan. 2 at the Landlock Equine Center after a stud career that also included stints in Michigan and Kentucky. Sefapiano's other notable runners included graded winners Rolling Sea and Humoristic. Sefapiano had progeny earnings of more than $14.5 million at his death.

Private Terms euthanized at 25

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Private Terms, a Grade 1 winner and sire of millionaires Soul of the Matter and Afternoon Deelites, was euthanized last week at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., the nursery said Friday.

The Private Account horse was 25 and had been pensioned at Claiborne since 2006.

Claiborne manager Bradley Purcell said Private Terms was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age.

Papa Clem joins high-end crowd

Papa Clem, with more than $1.1 million in earnings, his racing career ended by an ankle injury.

The $7,500 that mare owners will pay to breed to Papa Clem in the upcoming breeding season immediately puts the 4-year-old toward the top of California's most expensive stallions.

Papa Clem, the winner of the Arkansas Derby last year, and the Grade 2 San Fernando Stakes earlier this month at Santa Anita, was retired last weekend because of an ankle injury. He will stand at Legacy Ranch in Clements, Calif.

Sale of Craig horses boosts Barretts auction

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Barretts January mixed sale enjoyed gains Monday at its opening session, thanks largely to a major reduction of bloodstock owned by Jenny Craig and her late husband, Sidney.

The session, the first of two at the Pomona, Calif., auction, grossed $1,233,600 for 148 horses sold. The average price was $8,335 and median was $4,500. The buy-back rate was 36 percent.

F-T catalogs 237 for Calder 2-year-old sale

Fasig-Tipton's Calder select 2-year-old sale has 237 horses in its catalog, the auction house announced Tuesday.

The sale is set for 11 a.m. March 2 at Calder Race Course in Miami, and an under-tack show will take place 10 a.m. Feb. 26 at Calder.

"The catalog is a little smaller than some previous years, but that's not something which surprised us," Fasig-Tipton chief executive officer Boyd Browning said. "Our Calder consignors reacted to the challenges posed by the marketplace by being extremely selective in their purchases."

New York breeders elect new officers

The New York Thoroughbred Breeders elected a new slate of officers Monday. The 11-member board unanimously re-elected Barry Ostrager as president, Tom Gallo as vice president, and Vivien Malloy as secretary/treasurer.

"In 2010 NYTB will continue to be extremely active concerning major challenges facing the racing and breeding industries," Ostrager said, "specifically the inaction by the state in implementing the VLTs [video lottery terminals] at Aqueduct and the crisis caused by the recent bankruptcy filing by NYC OTB."
