Darley will shuttle Lonhro, top Australian sire, to U.S.

Darley will shuttle the leading Australian sire, Lonhro, to the United States for the 2012 Northern Hemisphere season. An 11-time Group 1 winner, he will stand at Darley's Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky., but Darley has yet to set his American fee. His most recent Australian stud fee was $88,000 Australian, about $85,000 in U.S. funds.

Old Friends holding Hall of Fame day

Old Friends, the equine retirement facility in Georgetown, Ky., will host a “Hall of Fame Day at Old Friends” on Oct. 17, starting with a 3 p.m. memorial observance for Hall of Famers Skip Away, Noor, and Precisionist, who are buried in the Old Friends Hall of Fame cemetery.

Smiling Tiger headed to auction after BC

Breeders’ Cup Sprint hopeful Smiling Tiger will head to auction after that race, selling agent Archie St. George announced Thursday.

Winner of the Triple Bend at Holywood Park in July, Smiling Tiger will sell as Hip No. 150 in Fasig-Tipton’s November sale in Lexington, Ky., which takes place on Nov. 6, the day after the Sprint. Owners Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz will offer Smiling Tiger, a 4-year-old Hold That Tiger colt, as a racing or stallion prospect.

Vinery moving Benny the Bull to Kentucky

Benny the Bull, 2008’s champion sprinter, will move from Vinery’s Florida farm to its Lexington, Ky., headquarters, his owner, Greg James, has announced.

An 8-year-old Lucky Lionel horse, Benny the Bull stood at Vinery Florida in 2010 and 2011, his first two years at stud. His fee this year was $3,000.

Uncle Mo to stand at Ashford Stud when racing career is over


Uncle Mo, last year's 2-year-old champion, will stand stud at Ashford Stud, Coolmore's North America farm in Versailles, Ky., when his racing career is over, owner Mike Repole announced Thursday.

Repole said he will retain "a significant" interest in Uncle Mo as a stallion and retains 100 percent of the colt's racing rights. Repole said a decision has not been made on when Uncle Mo would be retired and left open the possibility of racing him as a 4-year-old.

Fasig-Tipton yearling sale has gains in average, median

A $180,000 Harlan's Holiday half-brother to Double Down Vinman led selling Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's Eastern fall yearling sale in Timonium, Md. The auction ended with increases in average and median prices.

After Wednesday's second session, the auction had sold 332 yearlings for $6,149,600. That was down 2 percent from last year, when a 17-percent larger catalog produced $6,273,800 in gross receipts for 392 yearlings. But the 2011 median shot up by 73 percent, from $5,350 last year to $9,250, and the average price advanced by 16 percent, from $16,005 to $18,523.

Fasig-Tipton sale sees Adena Springs buy session leader

Frank Stronach's Adena Springs, which picked up 44 yearlings at Keeneland's recent September yearling auction, continued buying Wednesday at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's Eastern fall yearling sale, which entered its final day off of large gains at its opening session.

At 3 p.m., Adena Springs had plucked the session-leader up for $110,000 at the auction in Timonium, Md. That was a gray or roan Holy Bull colt out of the Polish Numbers mare Toasty that Candyland's agency sold on behalf of Dreamtime Stable.

Vinery's New York farm getting Giant Surprise, maiden winner

Saratoga juvenile winner Giant Surprise, retired after his July 30 win with a non-displaced condylar fracture, will enter stud next year at Vinery in New York.

A Giant's Causeway colt owned by Mike Repole, Giant Surprise will stand for $3,500 at Vinery's Sugar Maple division in Poughquag,  N.Y.
