Boosted by big bids for Galileo’s progeny, including a $4.2 million colt, the Tattersalls October Book 1 sale broke a European record for gross sales and ended Thursday with upswings in gross and average price.
The sale-topper, auctioned Thursday at the last session in Newmarket, England, is a three-quarter-brother to 2007 Epsom Derby winner and European champion 3-year-old Authorized. It is also the family of recent Arc de Triomphe winner Solemia.
Wednesday was a big day for Galileo fillies at the Tattersalls October sale’s Book 1 segment in Newmarket England. Galileo daughters took the second session’s four highest prices, led by a $2.5 million full sister to 2012 Epsom Oaks winner Was.
Closing Move, a 3-year-old Bernardini filly from Darley’s racing stable, brought $100,000 on Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga mixed and racing-age sale, where she was the most expensive horse at a new auction many consignors welcomed, despite a 41 percent buyback rate.
The one-day sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., sold 119 horses for $1,933,600, resulting in an average price of $16,249 and a $12,000 median.
Fasig-Tipton vice president of sales Bayne Welker said that, as of now, the auction house plans to hold the sale again next year.
Topped by a $150,000 Bertrando colt bought by Arnold Zetcher, the Barretts October yearling auction enjoyed large gains Tuesday night.
The auction in Pomona, Calif., sold 20 more yearlings this year, 174 versus 154 a year ago, and saw gross soar by 54 percent to $4,006,600. Average also rose by 36 percent to $23,026, and median nearly doubled on an 85 percent increase, from $9,750 to $18,000. The buyback rate also remained relatively low at 19 percent, well down from last year’s 30 percent.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Claiborne Farm’s young stallion War Front, whose 2012 stakes-winners include Grade 1 winner Data Link, will get a stud fee hike in 2013 to $80,000.
War Front is the historic Paris, Ky., farm’s most expensive sire and stood for an advertised fee of $60,000 this year.
The Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling sale kicked off Tuesday in Newmarket, England, with a classic bidding duel that resulted in John Ferguson’s buying the session-topper for just more than $1.3 million.
Ferguson, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum’s regular agent, went to 800,000 guineas – the equivalent of $1,344,000 at the current rate – for a son of Maktoum’s Raven’s Pass foaled March 7, 2011. Ferguson outbid Maktoum’s longtime rival, Coolmore Stud boss John Magnier, for the chestnut son of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Nightime, by Galileo.
A pair of weanlings from Munnings’s first crop were the early leaders Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga mixed and racing-age sale.
By 3:30 p.m., the one-day auction in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., had sold 73 horses for a total of $1,079,700, yielding a $14,790 average at that stage and a $12,000 median in a market that was proving especially difficult for broodmares. The session also struggled early with a buyback rate that was running at 44 percent at 3:30 p.m.
