Mixed reaction to Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga mixed sale

Closing Move, a 3-year-old Bernardini filly from Darley’s racing stable, brought $100,000 on Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga mixed and racing-age sale, where she was the most expensive horse at a new auction many consignors welcomed, despite a 41 percent buyback rate.

The one-day sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., sold 119 horses for $1,933,600, resulting in an average price of $16,249 and a $12,000 median.

Fasig-Tipton vice president of sales Bayne Welker said that, as of now, the auction house plans to hold the sale again next year.

Barretts: $150K Bertrando colt tops strong October yearling sale

A Bertrando/Telling Stories colt topped the Barretts October yearling auction with a $150,000 price tag.

Topped by a $150,000 Bertrando colt bought by Arnold Zetcher, the Barretts October yearling auction enjoyed large gains Tuesday night.

The auction in Pomona, Calif., sold 20 more yearlings this year, 174 versus 154 a year ago, and saw gross soar by 54 percent to $4,006,600. Average also rose by 36 percent to $23,026, and median nearly doubled on an 85 percent increase, from $9,750 to $18,000. The buyback rate also remained relatively low at 19 percent, well down from last year’s 30 percent.

Claiborne Farm raises War Front’s stud fee to $80K

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Claiborne Farm’s young stallion War Front, whose 2012 stakes-winners include Grade 1 winner Data Link, will get a stud fee hike in 2013 to $80,000.

War Front is the historic Paris, Ky., farm’s most expensive sire and stood for an advertised fee of $60,000 this year.

$1.34 million Raven's Pass colt tops Day 1 at Tattersalls sale

The Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling sale kicked off Tuesday in Newmarket, England, with a classic bidding duel that resulted in John Ferguson’s buying the session-topper for just more than $1.3 million.

Ferguson, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum’s regular agent, went to 800,000 guineas – the equivalent of $1,344,000 at the current rate – for a son of Maktoum’s Raven’s Pass foaled March 7, 2011. Ferguson outbid Maktoum’s longtime rival, Coolmore Stud boss John Magnier, for the chestnut son of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Nightime, by Galileo.

Fasig-Tipton Saratoga mixed sale topped by Munnings weanlings in early selling

A pair of weanlings from Munnings’s first crop were the early leaders Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga mixed and racing-age sale.

By 3:30 p.m., the one-day auction in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., had sold 73 horses for a total of $1,079,700, yielding a $14,790 average at that stage and a $12,000 median in a market that was proving especially difficult for broodmares. The session also struggled early with a buyback rate that was running at 44 percent at 3:30 p.m.

In Lingerie, Tapitsfly cataloged to sell at Fasig-Tipton November sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Two Keeneland Grade 1 winners last weekend are headed to the auction ring, at least for now, their owners say.

Aron Wellman, whose Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners group owns Spinster winner In Lingerie with Gary Barber, says the 3-year-old filly’s 16 partners are “keeping their options open” but currently are keeping her in the Fasig-Tipton November sale catalog. Frank Jones Jr., who bred and owns First Lady winner Tapitsfly, says he’s sending her to the same sale on Nov. 5.

“She’s definitely entered in the sale as of right now,” Wellman said of In Lingerie.

Eltish euthanized at age 20

Eltish, the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up who stood this year at Mole’s Hill Farm in Millerton, N.Y., was euthanized last week due to neurological complications, the farm announced Friday.

The Cox’s Ridge horse was 20 and most recently was advertised with a $3,000 stud fee.
