Fasig-Tipton: October sale continues gains; $440k Speightstown colt tops second session

LEXINGTON, Ky. - A $440,000 Speightstown colt raised the bar Tuesday as Fasig-Tipton’s Kentucky October yearling posted a second day of increases.

Session gross increased 25 percent with 43 more yearlings sold this year, rising from last year’s $6,358,800 for 254 horses to $7,968,900 for 297 horses. Average price gained seven percent. climbing from $25,035 to $26,831, and median advanced eight percent, from $12,000 to $14,000. Buybacks for the day were 19 percent, up from last season’s 17 percent.

Musketier to stand at Adena Springs Canada in 2013

Musketier, who won seven graded or group stakes before being retired last week at age 10, will stand his first year at stud next breeding season.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Canadian champion turf runner Musketier, the seven-time graded/group winner who retired after finishing last in the Oct. 18 Sycamore Stakes at Keeneland, will enter stud at Adena Springs Canada, the farm announced Tuesday afternoon. The farm will announce his fee later.

$140K Arch colt leads Fasig-Tipton October Tuesday session

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A $140,000 Arch colt was the session leader Tuesday as Fasig-Tipton’s Kentucky October yearling sale entered its second day off Monday’s across-the-board increases.

The Arch colt, bought by the Dapple Bloodstock agency, topped a spate of eight yearlings to sell for $100,000 or more by 3 p.m at the Lexington auction. The Feb. 7 colt is the first foal out of Cat Thief’s daughter Tazarine and hails from the family of Grade 1-placed runners Resplendency and Hero’s Tribute. Highclere Sales was the consignor.

Sires Will He Shine, Act of Duty moving to Saudi Arabia

Kentucky sire Will He Shine and Florida stallion Act of Duty are headed to Saudi Arabia in private purchases brokered by Chad Schumer’s Schumer Bloodstock.

Schumer declined to identify the horses’ buyer or buyers or where they would stand, confirming only that they will go to Saudi Arabia.

Will He Shine, winner of the 2007 True North Handicap and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Cuvee, stood this year at Millennium Farms for $2,500. The 10-year-old Silver Deputy horse is the sire of such winners as Hewillglittrnshine and Luckysdream from two racing-age crops.

Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale posts gains across the board on Day 1

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A $200,000 Giant’s Causeway colt from the family of graded winners Grasshopper and Turf War earned top billing Monday as Fasig-Tipton’s October yearling sale got under way with across-the-board gains.

The opening session grossed $7,230,200 for 293 yearlings, an increase of 50 percent from last year’s $4,811,900 total for 221 horses. Average increased 13 percent, from $21,773 to $24,676, and median improved 8 percent, from $12,000 to $13,000. The buyback rate was 21 percent, down from last year’s 25 percent.

$200,000 Giant's Causeway colt leading first session at Fasig-Tipton October yearling sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A $200,000 Giant’s Causeway colt from the family of graded winners Grasshopper and Turf War had top billing Monday as Fasig-Tipton’s October yearling sale got under way.

Nick De Meric, agent, bought the Feb. 20 son of Lerici, by Woodman. Gainesway, agent, sold the session-leader, whose dam is a three-quarters-sister to Grass Skirt. That Mr. Prospector mare produced Grasshopper, a Grade 3 winner who was second in the 2007 Travers, and Grade 3 winner Turf War.

Street Sense to stand for Darley in Japan

Street Sense, the 2006 juvenile champions and 2007 Kentucky Derby winner who is now a Darley stallion, will join Darley’s Japanese roster for 2013. Multiple graded winner Desert Party also will move from Darley’s Kentucky operation to stand at Sequel Stallions in New York, alongside another Darley sire, Girolamo.

Breeding activity in New York, Florida see major increases

Breeding statistics released Friday by The Jockey Club show a continued decline in North American breeding activity overall contrasted with pockets of increased activity for some stallions and in the key states of New York and Florida.

North American breeding activity reported through Oct. 14 showed that 1,861 active stallions covered 35,391 mares. Those numbers represent a 3.8 percent decline in the number of active stallions and a 3 percent decline in numbers of mares bred compared with statistics reported at this time last year.

Shadwell reduces fees for Invasor, Jazil

Shadwell Farm in Lexington, Ky., will reduce the stud fees for five of its stallions in 2013, with 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor taking a dramatic cut from his advertised 2012 fee of $20,000 to $4,000 next year.

Jazil, the 2006 Belmont Stakes winner, also will stand for $4,000 next year, down from $7,500 in 2012.
