Telling’s first foals born in Florida

Telling, with Javier Castellano up, wins the Sword Dancer Invitational by two lengths over Better Talk Now.

Multiple Grade 1 winner and first-year sire Telling was represented by his first reported foal, a filly, on March 3 in Dunnellon, Fla.

Bred by Jan Cubbage, the filly is the seventh foal out of the Not For Love mare Dolly by Golly, who has produced four winners from five to race. The filly has already been named Notorious Flirt; she is owned by Alex and Mary Lieblong, who campaigned Telling.

Agave Kiss retired, booked to Tapit

Agave Kiss, a daughter of Lion Heart, was a multiple stakes winner.

One of trainer Rudy Rodriguez’s stakes winners from 2012, the New York-bred Agave Kiss, has been retired from racing because of ankle issues, Rodriguez said.

Viane Lizza, whose Flying Zee Racing Stables campaigned Agave Kiss, said Thursday that Agave Kiss would be bred to Tapit. Agave Kiss arrived at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky on Thursday, after vanning from Gulfstream Park.

First foal by Naughty New Yorker born in Canada

The first reported foal by graded stakes-winning millionaire Naughty New Yorker is a colt born on March 6 at Ascot Stud near Port Colborne, Ont., where the stallion stands.

The colt is the first foal out of Top of the Tree, a winning Crypto Star mare. Out of the winning Air Forbes One mare Glass Tree, Top of the Tree is a half-sister to stakes winner Off The Glass.

Penn National to assist in retired horse adoption

Penn National Race Course will aid in the process of retired racehorse aftercare by running informational slates featuring horses available for adoption on its simulcast feed.

The slates will feature photos of the horses, biographical information, and contact information for the farm where the horse is located. They will also feature information regarding what activity each horse may be best suited for in his or her next career, such as trail riding or show jumping.

New Jersey names state-bred champions

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey has named its 2012 state-bred champions, led by Horse of the Year Javerre.

The Outflanker gelding won four of seven starts in 2012 for earnings of $158,170, highlighted by a win in the New Jersey Breeders Handicap and on-the-board finishes in the Maryland Million Sprint and the City of Laurel Stakes. Those efforts also helped Javerre secure New Jersey’s champion sprinter and champion 3-year-old male honors.

Little Mike named Florida-bred Horse of the Year

Little Mike wins the Breeders’ Cup Turf, giving his trainer, Dale Romans, his eighth Grade 1 victory of the year.

Coast-to-coast sensation Little Mike, who won three Grade 1 races in 2012 including the Breeders’ Cup Turf and was an Eclipse Award finalist in the champion turf male division, has been named the 2012 Florida-bred Horse of the Year by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association. The award was announced along with other honors at the FTBOA Florida Champions Awards Gala, held at the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala, Fla., on March 11.

Toccet arrived in Oklahoma for the 2012 breeding season carrying a portfolio with a coast-to-coast reach, having sired stakes winners from Tampa to Vancouver during his first seven seasons at stud. Event of the Year, Grade 2 winner and sire, dies at 17

Event of the Year, a multiple Grade 2 winner and sire, died from complications related to colic in January 2012 in Venezuela at age 17, the Blood-Horse reports.

Homebred by John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, the son of Seattle Slew established himself as one of the favorites on the 1998 Kentucky Derby trail on the strength of his five-length victory in the Grade 2 Jim Beam Stakes at Turfway Park. However, he was withdrawn from Derby contention before the race after suffering a fractured right knee during training.
